Won't Start

I am looking at a second MB, a 75 300d that does not start. It has been sitting since July when in was parked and was running good at that time.this would be a long distance purchase (approx 400 mi) and I would need to get it up and running for the return trip. What should I look for?

"Does not start" can have a wide range on meanings. Could you be more specific?

How can you be certain that this was truly the situation.

Chasing a no start on an unknown diesel can be a long and extensive escapade with no guarantee of results.

You could also change fuel filters and get the glow plugs working correctly and it will start right up.

Positive knowledge of the internal condition of the engine is mandatory to know how to proceed. If the engine was positively "running good" last July, you'll have no problems with it. But, I suspect otherwise. A diesel that was "running good" six months ago should have minimal issues to start today.

understood. I can, at this point, only go by what I am told.If it was indeed running 6 mo. ago.....should not be major.

I got the tow dolly, but only have a Motor Home to pull it with......6mpg
besides.....it's sooooo much more fun to lowball,tinker,.......then drive away

Could be as simple as needing a new battery, maybe
it needs a good prime with the primer pump.
Bad glow plugs?
Valve adjustment?
Fuel filters?
It probably isn't cold related being that the car is
in TX.

Louis.

Definitely a good looking vehicle at first glance.

If it won't start......and was truly running six months ago.......you might get lucky and find that one glow plug is out. With one failed plug, they all go out on that vehicle.

Other than the plugs, fuel filters are always the first thing to change.

After that point, if it won't start, it's going to get more complicated...........

There are so many members in the Houston area perhaps you could make arrangements with one to go over and get it started for you if possible. Or at least verify it is something simple like the glow plugs out. First you have to get an agreed upon price. No sense increasing it's marketable value and then trying to negotiate. That auction has a way to go yet and I see it is already a small amount above 300.00. Perhaps it will become a difficult proposition. At six mpg leave the tow vehicle at home and rent or borrow a half ton with a good hitch.

It does look good at first glance and worth investigation. However, the car is in different positions in the various photos. In some of the photos it doesn't look like its parked at a home but more like a dealers lot. Is is just being pushed around, or is there more to the story. It looks like the air cleaner is missing?

I noticed that too and assumed( ) some of the photos were taken at a different time. He does have a reserve on it and I emailed to see if he will disclose what it is.....I'll go from there, maybe make an offer.
