Is There An Easy Way Or A Trick To Removeing The Differintial Seal By The Axle

I Attempted To Remove The Seal On The Differential Where The Rear Axle Attaches And It Is Seeming To Be A Difficult Task. Is There A Trick Or An Easy Way To Remove It. Is There Anything I Need To Be Careful With When I Remove It. I Don't Want To Mess Anything Up If I Try To Pry Or Cut It Out. It Looks Like It Should Be Replaced. Any Help With This Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Ray M

Are you talking about the donut-shaped oil seal? I didn't replace mine when I had my axles off recently but I've heard it takes quite a bit of effort, like there was a pic on a recent thread where someone used both legs and a crowbar to pry it out. It'll come, just takes a bit of effort.

Yes It Is The Rubber Seal That The Axle Attaches To And It Is Fastened To The Differential. So You Don't Think Any Thing Could Be Hurt By Digging Or Cutting It Out.

I used a two foot pry bar and the foot method myself. So have a few others on here. Don't look in the FSM for a guide this time, as it shows a screwdriver being used. That isn't quite an accurate representation of the tool to use in this case.

Ray,

To get mine out, I purchased an 18 inch crowbar and had to use both feet. The new ones should go in nicely, though!!

I did this..

I did this job once and don't remember it being that difficult....but I don't remember a lot of things these days. I would have used either a standard seal puller (18" tool with a couple of differenct sized "claws" on the end)....this may have been the job that I remember bending the claws....I would have then reverted to automotive pry bars....in the end, I did it, and it wasnt that bad.

Good luck,

Mark

I removed some recently and had to use the long pry bar. Plan on destroying it when you take it out.
