Since I'm retired.......
Folks,
Since I'm retired, and it was cold outdoors this AM.....I did some web searching.....and then decided just to go to the source and ask....could not find an e-mail address anywhere on Exxon's website (Exxon station is where I buy a lot of my fuel).....so I used the MSD data, tech support phone number, called and asked.....they thought it to be a legitimate question....and forwarded me up the Exxon food chain.....until I got a private phone number for a gentleman Win Gardner, at the Exxon HQ in Virginia......he told me that most of the Exxon stations are dispensing ULSD, but there are a few pockets of LSD still out there as Exxon (or any other refiner) has to use 80% of it's capacity to manufacture ULSD.......the problem seems to be the distributors, who are apparently a tad less than diligent in labeling the pumps .....he also stated that this was an industry wide problem......but that Exxon does have folks going around sampling the fuels dispensed by Exxon stations......and that he was, in fact, just typing a letter to the EPA stating that Exxon was in full compliance in it's 80% ULSD mandate......he also stated that he had been in contact with MB USA, and that he has sent MB USA a list of the Exxon stations that are in full compliance regardless of the pump labeling ....these will be added to the new MB Navigation systems...... He also said that there is no need to use additives with Exxon ULSD..... He did state that "Fuel Color" is not a good means of Fuel ID because there is a wide range of color out there...... Bottom line.....when in doubt....go with the pump label.....which in my case is still LSD.....but makes no difference to me, other than pricing.....part of our conversation had to do with pricing.....and the fact that if I have to go with the pump label, why do I have to pay the LSD price?? SB

Thanks for the info re: fuel additives and suggestions just in case. I'd rather be safe than sorry. We do have a small fleet of diesel trucks at work ranging from a Ford E350 Powerstroke up to a 53K GVW IH Cummins so I have had some concerns but wasn't able to get any comfortable answer out of any of the distributors.

Wow thanks for the research!
Anyway I think the only people that have to be concerned are 2007 CDI owners. I couldn't care less and neither of my cars has really noticed the difference in fuel. Maybe some of the additives we are putting in our tanks are causing the leaks....
