Looking at a 1992 300D 2.5 turbo

over the next couple days. Price and mileage is about right and the car does not look bad from the pics that I have seen. I'm excited.
Moving the MB driving experience forward about a decade if I buy it.

You'll love it

I have a '92 300D and it is the best running, driving, riding car I've ever owned. I have had many, many cars.

My 300D is my first Diesel.

92 is the better year of the w124 for diesels (IMO) Mine drove SLOW when I first got her - clean the alda lines and theirs NO banjo bolt. Also be sure the valve cover's oil seperator works, it can/will cause some problems (look for oil coming through the breather hose)

Great car. Mine has 413,000 miles on the stock motor. The PO (a member on this site) changed the head gasket at around 380k.

Man I am pumped.
I did not get interested in one until I got one in the shop with 333k miles on it and you would be shocked how well the car runs/drives out. Unfortunately, it is leaking every fluid that is has and that is the reason it is in the shop. I'll be pulling the engine/tranny over the next week or so.

After driving it I started looking around and stumbled accross the one I am going to look at.

Is that the one that pulled in your driveway as I was pulling out on Friday?

The 90 300D I used to have (before my kid clobbered some trees with it) was a really nice car. Very quick.

I often check the ads to see if something interesting turns up within striking distance. I was very excited last Friday evening to see a listing from a local Nissan dealership for a 1991 300D with ~101k miles!

From the Carfax (had an active account already), it appeared to have been originally registered locally, then registered once again locally, so I figured there was a fair chance that it was a true "local car". No pictures and no price listed, and I think I may have spotted the ad within a day or so of it being placed.

Called the next morning - no joy, car was "not available". Bummer! Even if I didn't buy it, I would have appreciated the opportunity for a test drive.

So good hunting, Jim! Properly sorted out, I think one of those would make a dynamite daily driver.

I LOVE my 92 300D. Although it seems to HATE slow city driving, it really responds out on the open road. SOLID car, thats for sure, but I do need to adjust the alda on mine, I hear that can help the transmission with the hard shifts.

My brother has one in nice condition.

They don't have a lot of power, because really the car is a 250D, 2.5 liter.

The fuel mileage is pretty good on the highway though, and the ride is softer than the earlier W124s. The American preference for soft ride took over in place of the German preference (in the earlier W124s) for a performance suspension.

A very good year for MB diesels.

I bought it. Picked it up for $4k. It will need a good cleaning and the Carfax shows there was a fender bender in 1997 but overall the car looks good and drives great. Whoever did the body work did a good job with it.

I figured the price was fair considering they are going to delivery it from Savannah to Macon, Ga. It has been a southern car all it's life. Plans are to use it as a daily driver.

Congrats on your new ride. It sounds like a nice one. What color is the exterior & interior? Can you post some picks?

Good luck with 'er. Great cars and the MB Tex really cleans up well.

As for power it's not a 603 off the line, but get them up to highway speed in the 2.5-4 grand power range and stomp the go pedal, they pass just fine . If want them to go, the kick down switch and turbo work well. I'm never in anybody's way. IMO can't even compare a 123 or 126 to the 124 handeling. Not that I don't love 123 & 6's, the 124 is closer to the "sport sedan" when driving, especially with a rim and tire upgrade.

Sounds like you did good. I gave $4500 for mine, and I had to fly to Detroit to pick it up.
