Valve Adjustment Query

So im out here doing my first valve adjustment on the MB and im referring to the dieselgiant page. It states to only turn the engine clockwise, never counter clockwise. Is that referenced from looking at the front of the engine? Just a little question. thanx

Reference point is looking straight at the crank bolt. In other words, looking at the front of the engine. Good luck.

thats exactly what i thought too, but his picture for the position of the lobe being at 1 o'clock is drivers perspective. so that would be 11 from front of engine. weird. thanx for the reply.

Just watch the direction the belts go with the engine running. That's the only way you should turn it. Can you post the pic so we can have a look?

It says the first cam lobe should be "pointing straight up, 90 degrees relative to the adjusting pad...to your eye it will look like 1 o'clock"
I assume this is the page you're using?
http://dieselgiant.com/valveadjustment.htm

Sorry I can't offer any personal advice...my 606 has hydraulic compensators...but I'm sure there are some people on this forum who can.

15Kmiles, or every third oil change...(assuming 5K change interval...)
as long as the lobe is pointing somewhere other than at the follower, it should be ok to adjust. it's best to be SURE and wait until the lobe is pointing up.

11 oclock or 1 o'clock?

You want the valve being adjusted to have the corresponding cam lobe pointint to the oiler bar....that would look like 1 o'clock from the front of the engine, and 11 o'clock from the driver's seat.

I have done the job by manually turning the engine in the past, but I always now use a push button switch (momentary on) that I rigged up with a couple of wire leads with clamps. I use this to jog the engine by "jumping" the connectors in the connection block on the passenger wheel hump.

When you do this, you do not want the engine to start on you (I did this once with the valve cover off...that was a real party!), so you 1) adjust valves when the engine is cold, 2) wire the engine stop linkage in the "stop" position with a piece of wire (push the red engine stop lever and see what component you need to wire in place after you remove the valve cover., and 3) when you jog the engine you do it by very quick momentary pushes of the switch. (Note, the ignition must bein the "run" position to do this).

Good luck,

Mark

The lobes should point directly at the oil tube above the cam.

Why are we using all this " 11 oclock from one angle, 1 oclock from another angle , pointing at the oil tube" when the factory shop manual gives an easy exact position description ?
The cam lobe top is supposed to be " opposite" (meaning 180 degrees) from the point it touches the ' rocker arm' ( the factory shop manual word ) ... the item which actually touches the cam and transfers the action to the valve cap nut.

and yes this makes sense, but from the photo on dieselgiant and even the one in the haynes manual, it clearly shows it not in that position. no worries, its all taken care of now. i was more concerned with the direction to turn the engine...clockwise....not counterclockwise, and where was that being referenced from....front of engine perspective or drivers perspective.

well again,...the repair manual and the dieselgiant page shows photos that do not coincide with the wording.
thanx guys.

Neither Haynes or DieselGiant manufactured the car you are driving... I am looking at the MB Factory Shop manual and it shows exactly the corresponding drawing to the description. Maybe it is time to use the real thing... which I think is also available online... or on CD...

Not too difficult. Just make sure it is pointing directly away from the part the lobe bears against (cam follower).
