Question: On a highway after bumps shakes too much!

I have this problem. At about 80 mph if car go over bump the front end starts to shake very strong. It keeps shaking untill I brake down to about 60mph. What is it? I'm wory to loose wheals at 80 mph. It is 1985 300SD. May be someone had th same problem and knows exactly what it is. Thank you.

Your suspension bushings are shot!!!

It could also be crappy tires....or a more likely a combination of the two....either way, slow down until you fix it.

True! I never drive with crappy tires on the motorway at least so I didn't think of that! But do slow down and make those repairs as soon as possible! We would like to see more posts from you! :stunned:  :euro:  :detective:  :thinking2 :worried2:

Maybe you lost a weight on one of your wheels too?

Sekal 01-06-2007 08:41 PM

Thank you for the replyes. It is not the tires for sure. It is very distinct. The car shakes strong like it loosing balanceor start jumping. Something is not tight enough. Some bushings, stabilization bars or sway bars or links, tie rod???? I thought some one would know.

Probably control arm bushings... upper and/or lower :)

that was my guess, when the wheels loose a weight they will go out of balance and shake violently at higher speeds.

Take the car to a local tire shop and have them check the balance of the wheels.

I doubt its suspension related.

bushings

I'd be willing to bet you have some bushings that need to be replaced. My car has visibly "sagging" control arm bushings and shakes at 68-72 (highway speed), noticeably worse slowing down or going down hill, doesn't shake very much accelerating or going up hill... now where the heck can I get one of those nifty spring compressors I've read so much about...
