210 diesel fuel system rejuvenation question
My 96 210 (E300) is running fine at present. I've been reading all the posts about the leaks of fuel and air from the fuel lines and O rings. My car has 118k miles on it and the fuel lines are brown and original. I have ordered some of the parts to replace all the old lines and O rings. My question is: should I replace the O rings and seals in the injection pump output lines? I was going to do the 5 fuel lines, O rings for the prefilter and shutoff valve and main filter replacement. I've already done the return lines. Is there anything else to attend to? Am I stupid to do this when it's not leaking?

I think you have it covered and that if your lines are all OE that you should consider you are on borrowed time and that preventive replacement is very appropriate.
By output lines I think you may be referring to delivery valve seals? If so, I would not do them as a preventive measure until you have reason to remove the intake manifold (i.e.: GLOW PLUGS....).

I think you have to take off the intake maniflod to get all the fuel lines_ ie the preheater thermostat to prefilter don't you?
Removal of the IM isn't too hard anyway, I just did my GP's and it has had the EGR fix so no cleanup is needed. |

I was able to do all the fuel lines w/o removing the IM on my turbo in less than 30 minutes.
Removing the windsheild washer bottle gains additional access to the side of the shutoff valve and lift pump lines. Pull one nut and an elec connection and you can flip it up and out of your way. The pre-filter to thermo line was one of the easier ones because it is up top and you can see everything. I think that body shape and flexibility come into play. I'm thin and have long arms. Some claim it impossible to do any of them without removing the IM first. You can get to the botttom/side of the IP if you remove the belly pan, but would then have tto watch out for dripping fuel from above. Just do it however you are most comfortable.

Thanks Terry,
I might be able to get the fuel temp one with the resonance pipe removed. Your car lacks that pipe I think. I'll collect all the parts and fix it when I get a couple free daylight hours. At least with the mild weather I can do some decent work. |
