83 300D gauge problems

I have a 83 300D. The gauges were erratic a few months ago, now they apear to be more or less dead. If the tach is reading , it will go dead when I turn on high beams. I also have a charging problem with the battery. For a week or more the car will start fine , then I'll find the thing dead. At first I thought something was drawing power while the car was off, but then I had a dead battery after driving for about a hour. the batt is about a year old and has had a load test. The brushes in the alt I changed a couple of days ago. About the gauges, they dont act dead. they sit at full deflection without movement . ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED THANKS RAY. p.s. where is the ground for the instruments,& how do I access it

check all your grounds

With that many electrical problems of that nature, and especially that headlight interaction, it's probably a ground someplace. Check them all and make sure they are clean and secure. Maybe use an ohm meter across them, they should each be 0 Ohms ideally, but anything under 0.5 Ohms is probably good enough (although a few cumulative 0.5 Ohms ones could be a problem).

cHECK THE GROUND CABLE where it attaches to the inner fender. Take it off and clean it. Check engine ground strap to frame, Passenger side I believe. My gut feeling is the multi wire plug at the back of the gauge cluster is loose. Necc to remove cluster and verify its fully plugged in. With the cluster out, you will see multiple brown wires attached to the dash brace. Make sure they're tight. The cluster is just resting in the dash, held in by a rubber surround gasket. A piece of stiff wire bent 90 degrees at about an inch on the bend should be able to be slid behind the cluster at either side to pull it out, then unscrew the speedo cable and remove the oil pressure line using 2 wrenches. Hope this helps. Bill

Which gauges are reading maxed out? If it's the fuel and engine temp gauge the gauge is fried and you'll probably have to replace it. A junk yard special will work fine.

Your tach is another story. There is a tach sensor on the driver's side fender in the engine compartment that is usually the culprit to a malfunctioning tach.
Try reading this it might help you.
