I don't know where you are searching, but if you looking for 92 to 95 diesels in the US, you are looking for 92 or 93 300SD or 94 S350. The numbering changed in 94. These cars are all W140.

Why do you want the diesel in the S class W140?

You need to search 300SD to bring up the early W140's. They were re named S350D for the 94-95 MY.

Why would you want a diesel W140?

MB stopped importing diesels because they couldn't get anyone to buy them. All diesel models after the W123 are uncommon for that reason. Remember, it was the era of 80 cents per gallon gasoline.....

I'd not be surprised that only 8 90-95 S class diesels were for sale on any given day -- the people who bought them tend to hold onto them (they are frugal, after all), and since they are VERY nice cars that get decent milage (25 mpg on the highway or so), they get bought pretty fast.

The W140, other than some electronics problems, is a fabulous car.

Correct a 1998 S300D with a turbo charged 606, and a 5spd 722.6 is a fabulous diesel S class. I'd buy one in a second if I came across one.

Peter, I think that the reason why Benz stopped selling diesels in the US is because they could not sell them new in California -- a major market for Benz.

During the first and second oil "crisis" diesel sales shot up, but like you said as memories of long lines dimmed, sales went down. But if were not for the California ban (and memories of the Olds diesel) sales of Benz diesels may have lingeredon for a while longer.

BTW, yesterday I messed around with the ICV in my 300TE. The ICV is clean and not gummed up at all One of the hoses, however, was old and cracked (it is the shorter of the two hoses). I bought one at hte dealer this morning and I will replace it tonight, see if that stops the occassional stalling upon decel. The interestingthing is that when the engine is running OK, the idle is literally buttery smooth.

Let's see what happens.

Thanks for the info guyz. I will stay on the lookout for a 300SD or a 300SLD. My father wants a big bodied diesel benz.

When you guyz say 5 speed, you mean 5 speed auto ?

Yes the S320's had the 5spd auto, don't know if they used them in the S350D's.

The extra gear is real nice.

Yes they are rare. Not many of them were sold here and the ones that did get sold often are parted out when the owner finds out that their car needs a $15K engine overhaul.

I also liked the idea of a diesel 140 but did some research and found out that the engines are total junk. Do yourself a favor and look at an S320 instead.
