Massive oil leak!

My leak is coming from the oil return low pipe where is joins the oil pan.

Can anyone trouble shoot what it might be before I take it into the shop?

It helps if you tell us what model and year the vehicle is, and the more detail the better the chance you will get more than a bunch of guesses or no responses at all.

If you have a car with a turbo, there is an oil supply and return line to the turbocharger bearings, and the supply is pressurized by the engine oil pump. It is not unheard of to have the pipe on the return wear the seals at the reentry point to the sump. I have never owned a W123 turboDiesel, so I have not done this repair, but I have read about it on this site. Do a search on the subject of turbocharger oil return line seals or the like. While likely a dirty, messy job, I don't think it is really complex. I also believe I have read of the return pipe itself being damaged and needing to be replaced.

If you are talking about the 240D oil/blowby gas separator, I believe the leak should be less of problem, but the answer is the same. I have even heard of dipstick tube seals failing at that point and leaving a mess.
Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim

yeah, knowing what you are working on will help us figure out your problem.
it could be the oil breather return line under the air cleaner is needing new seals too...

I'm working on a 1985 300SD Turbo Diesel.

So far, I'm going through 3 quarts a week and my Home Owners Assoc. is getting pissed about the oil stains.

Try a search for turbo oil drain. There is a grommet down there, but it is a pain to get it apart. I'm cutting out the middle of that tube today and replacing it with some hydraulic hose to fix my leak and make future servicing easier.

That fix, changing a hard line to a flexible line, may just make the grommet life get better. The turbo is hung from the exhaust system, I believe. The exhaust is attached to the head and the body, which which don't always move in concert with each other. This need to take up the slight motion between the hard pipe, turbocharger body, exhaust manifold and sump is taken up by the grommet as the engine rocks around. A soft section in the middle of the line might make the grommet life easier. The consequence of a failure might be worse though - you could just pump the engine oil out on the ground while driving, for instance, if the hydraulic hose fails while a grommet failure only lets a portion seep on the ground, where it is noticed before it causes an engine lubrication problem.

Good luck, Jim
