Replacing window motor?

I am replacing the window motor on my W123 - front driver's side. Do I have to remove the entire regulator, or is there a way to pull just the old motor and replace?

Steps?

Thanks, ryan

It's been a while, but I think there are 3-4 bolts that hold the gear to the motor. Might be able to get it off that way.

If its the same as the motor on an 83 300SD there are two screws holding the motor to the gear head. Remove the two screws and you can pull the motor down while turning it and it comes out. I had a bad motor and when I removed it I found the bottom bearing frozen to the shaft. I pulled it all apart, cleaned and lubed it and it works fine.

Great news, and nice pics. So there is still hope for a motor that isn't operating beyond just replacing it? Will be looking into this on my wagon as the left rear does not work (it's getting power).

Do you think all the window motors are the same (in a given car) or are they unique from depending on the door?

i dont know but i suspect they would all be the same. the gears might be different though.

i had the experience of finding one frozen too. lubed it and away it went!

My problem is highlighted below:

I have had ongoing problems with my driver's side power window - will work part way and then grinds and will only continue up or down if I grab and pull up or push down while operating the switch. Found the problem - the white, plastic gear (2 5/8" diameter) inside the motor is missing some teeth. Is this repairable and is this gear available - can I just pull the gear and replace? If so, how - I'm not sure I see how to get it out.

I am pretty sure this is the extent of my problems - regulator seems fine, etc. I would just like to replace the motor (actually I would like to just replace the gear, but I can't figure out how to do that) without tearing the entire regulator out.

If I remember correctly the gear head and motor are held in by just a few screws. When you remove the mounting screws you want to be holding the assembly up or it will just drop, it looks like you broke everything when it slides down but everything slides back into place pretty easily when you reassemble it. The motor and gear head are attached to the swing gear, I don't know the correct name for this part, by a few screws on the back but you can get those out by feel. After the screws on the back are out then you can slide off the the motor and head. The motor is the same on all doors but the gear head is different from one side to the other. Another thing that can go wrong with the motor is the brushes that are in a holder that you can see in the pictures that I posted. There is a discussion about this in a thread titled "is my window motor dead"

Quick update. I finally got around to replacing the motor today and it was pretty straightforward. I was able to remove the motor by removing the 3 bolts (10 mm) from inside and then doing some slight twisting. New (used) motor works fine. Cost me all of $25.

My old motor works fine but the gear is missing teeth (see the picture above - its about 2 1/2 inches in diameter). Anyone know where I can get another gear - maybe someone has a blown motor lying around?? I wouldn't mind having a back-up.
