1983 300 d Automatic trans does not take off in 1st gear
got a problem with 300d 1983 automatic , shifts perfect if shifted manually , but when in "D" it does not take off in 1st gear , as soon as i step on gaspetal and accelarate you can feel it shift into second gear even before the car starts to move , reverse is fine , only thing i did installed a new modulator becorse the rubber was bad , and it did not turn to easy for ejustement thanks erich

It's not supposed to. They start in 2nd.

It depends on the year. My 77 300d starts in 2nd gear, my 85 300TD starts in first gear. I don't know what year the change was made, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was correlated with the introduction of the turbo.
