Fuel line - Where did it go?!?

Interesting experience this morning...

Got up drove to work and just about the time I got there I started smelling diesel... Not good..

Pulled into the parking space and popped the hood...

The fuel line coming off the the rear injector is not there, and I see it making little squirts of diesel onto the firewall and inside of the hood.

I'm going to go back and look again when there is more light but I couldn't see a disconnected line nor where the line would have gone (I'm in the northwest so it's not exactly light yet)

I've got a '75 300D..

Thanks

Alex

There should be two lines on each injector. One connecting it to the injector in front of it and one to the injector behind it. One of the lines on the rear injector is a short plugged line. It could have fallen off. What condition are the rest of the lines in. It may be time for new ones. Some duct tape will probably work untill you can find a replacement.

Yeah, it sounds like the end-plug came off...you need about a 1" piece of braided return hose with a plug in it. MB sells it as PN 605-070-00-55 and it runs about $3-4. As others have said, if the rest of the hose looks bad pick up a meter of it and replace them all.

In a pinch...

In a pinch, while waiting to get the proper hose, you may use 1/8" fuel line that you can buy at a lawn mower shop. A short piece of this along with some creativity in plugging the end will keep you going without making more of a mess.

You can just get a piece long enough that allows you to fold the hose back on itself and then hold it in place with a small hose clamp that the mower shop will also sell you. Push this on the nipple and you're good to go, at least temporarily.

Fold the end over and zip tie it tightly -- that should work well enough to get it home. I'd zip tie that kind of hose to the barb too -- it'll swell, get soft and leak pretty quickly.

If you're in downtown Portland, try the dealer for the hose and plug, or I can loan you my spare plug. Might even have some hose you can have (think I have some extra). Have to wait till this evening when I can get home to Aloha and can get it tho.

Duh.. what am I thinking.. borrow a $3 stub of metal.. that I was keeping in case I might need it myself in a few years... heck, you can have it. One less thing for me to store

That end piece of hose with the plug in it is part of my spare parts supply that I carry with me all the time.

Wow, you're kidding me, that little arrow shaped piece of metal is worth $3? Good thing I decided to toss my extra one into my bin of spare vacuum line parts in my parts racks.....
I just went to the local auto parts, got 5' of 1/8" fuel hose for about $5, redid my whole return system with it and its been fine for months, checked it 2 days ago while under there and its in great shape. I keep a 2' chunk in my emergency kit in the trunk just in case.
I learn to work around dealer things here, as the nearest local dealer I know of around here is Courtesy motors in Chico, which is a slight drive from here (I live 23 miles east of Redding in the hills)
Not that I would be inclined to let a dealer rip me off like that on a 1" chunk of straight rubber hose with a plug in the end.
I'm one of those people that only goes to a dealer out of absolute necessity for any vehicle. I am not one of those people who use jury rig fixes on things either. (only used duct tape on a coolant hose once because it blew up on the freeway, had been to a dealer for a recall the day before and the tech had damaged the hose and looked the other way on it)-also why I do my own work.
