Removing Second Fuel Tank from 81 240D
I have a 1981 240D which has the optional second fuel tank. I wanted to know if the second tank is the tank at the back of the trunk, and if so, can it be removed to make room for a WVO tank? If it can be removed what do I need to consider to make sure I don't mess up connections to the main tank.
Thank you in advance for any information, assistance or for pointing me in the right direction. |

Pictures? There was no second tank as an option so whatever extra tank is back there was installed by a past owner.
The original tank is between the back seat and the trunk, below the back windshield deck. |

I might be interested in the aux tank if you do remove it.
Where about are you located? Thanks,

240D Tank
The original owner was my father who said he got the 'extra tank' when he purchased the car from the dealer. Maybe a dealer add-on? I thought the additional tank was the one in the trunk, but couldn't find what looked like a second tank anywhere else. (Never thought to search before.) I haven't tried filling it up, but my dad said it takes about 40 gallons fully fueled and can make it from Los Angeles to Portland, OR, without stopping to refuel. Is the tank in the picture a standard tank or is that a larger capacity replacement?

The one in your pic is definatly not an OG/OEM part. Someone added it on.

240d Tank
Found the original tank. It's behind the one in the picture. No way to see it except by pulling out the first-aid kit and looking down. Smaller than I expected.
I appreciate all the help. I now have a better idea of what's going on and can now check if there's a way to remove the second tank and replace it with a WVO tank. cessna5354, I'm located north of San Diego, and if you're interested in the tank email me at trentmb {a.t} pacificstar.us I'll save your information in case I decide to remove it. |

If you next tell us you want to take out a manual transmission to put in an automatic - we'll know you're crazy!
Just joking - don't you know people WANT those tanks here? Ken300D

Manual Transmission
I like driving a standard, but I'd like this one more if the rubber boot around the shift would stay attached to the thing that's suposed to hold it. Any ideas there?

Coverting second tank to WVO
Any ideas on how to do that? I'm still reading up on the different companies that sell the kits, and trying to find a solution that's reliable and as easy as possible to set up.

Boot
I did. It's the new one that doesn't stay in place.
Is glue the preferred method of attaching them? Thought maybe I was missing a clamp or fixture of some sort. |

That's what I did. A drop of superglue in each corner. Enough to keep it in place but still easy to remove without damage.

Contact the company that sells the kits and tell them you have a tank and give them the measurements! Kits usually DON"T include the tank. That is something you have to order separately at additional cost! You already have one that you know fits really well because it's been there for a long time! You could save yourself a few hundred bucks! Since you already have the tank set up, you just cleared one of the hardest parts! You will need 2 things to start, a way to make the tanks operate independently, and a way to keep your WVO warm. Take plenty of pictures you can download to the kit makers and see who comes up with the best plan at a price you can afford! And by all means, keep us in the loop! I can't wait to see how it turns out!
