Heating issues!! Please help!

Good morning to all.
I own a 1983 300SD.Last September i had to replace the engine radiator. These past few weeks we had very cold weather and not much heat is coming out of my heater.
Last night i had to go on a little trip of about 70 miles, all of this on highway driving. The temperature gauge barely went over 40c,and i hardly had any heat at all.
Could my thermostat be faulty?
Regards
Dan Vancouver Canada

Sounds like a monovalve. Search on that term and you'll get loads of info.

Not the monovalve, if it were, he'd have too much heat, and be baking inside. As it is the engine itself isn't warming up. Replace the thermostat, or swap it with a known good one. Let us know what you find...

Second on the thermostat. Had the exact symptoms in my 84SD, engine temp never went above 50C or so...drained about half the antifreeze, popped off the thermostat and sure enough it was broken. After replacing toasty warm heat. Takes about an hour or so. You can always check the monovalve as well, take all of 5 mintes to take out the 4 screws and check the valve.

Don't know about Chris, but I used to bring the company jet into YVR on a regular basis. The president bought a yacht there. 5 million and it never left the marina until he sold it a year later.

I've been needing to replace the thermostat on the wagon. It often barely makes it to 100, and my gauge is in Fahrenheit......
Thanks goodness these aren't to difficult to replace. I assume mine is stuck open......

A faulty monovalve can cause either excessive or insufficient heat, depending on the nature of the failure. (Which is not to suggest that the monovalve is suspect in the described situation.)

Never made it that far North. Most of my flying has been on the East coast, some trips for training in the NV desert, and overseas from floating sovereign us territory.

Well talk about night and day!!

Just replaced the thermostat this morning and heat I have and then some!! I would assume that since the engine was running cold all that time that my fuel consumption will decrease somewhat from now on...correct?
Thanks so much guy's!
Best regards
Dan

Yes, your mileage should be better with your engine at proper temperature....
but perhaps more important the wear on the engine will be less...
