On the quest for fuel system crush washers
I'm having a bit of trouble locating the crush washers/fuel seals for my fuel system. I've had the banjo bolts off several times now and feel its time to do it right and put new crush washers in all the way around. Problem is, I can't find them. I've tried on here, Performance Products, and DieselGiant. Performance Products has one little washer, and says "two needed for injection pump and four for the filter." I know that, but those bolts are different sized so I'm having trouble figuring out how one sized crush washer is going to fit them all Anybody know of an easy place to get them? I have also emailed Phil and he's given me some part numbers, but they don't plug into the part number search. I assume he's taking the holiday today or hasn't gotten around to my email, which is fine, my car is just sitting in the garage however. I havent tried the dealer, yet, because they don't seem to give a rip about my old diesel.

Most local auto parts places carry them. Be sure and ask for "brake system" copper washers or they will give you a blank stare.

You pretty much answered your own question....
Go to the dealer. On each job plan on each and every stage , even stages you did not know existed, being as hard as they can possibly be .... as aggravating as they can possibly be....and three times as expensive as they should be.... that will help you maintain your gusto until the job is completed..or you sell the car.... |

Aggravating = having to ask for brake system parts to fix your fuel system...

I just went through this at the Orlando dealership. They sold me two different sizes of circular rubber(?) washers. The parts exploded diagram looked like they both went on the bolt that holds the spin on in place. I don't see how this could be. I am assuming the small one goes on the banjo bolt for air bleeding. I will try to install them at the next filter change. I tried the copper crush washer idea last time around. None of the washers in the assortment really fit right. Let us know what you figure out.

What are you looking for exactly, the parts to seal the center bolt, or the copper washers for the banjo bolts on the plastic fuel lines?

Sorry for not being clear. I'm looking for the banjo bolt crush washers for the plastic fuel lines, which I have had off several times in my replumbing job during my painfully long WVO conversion. I was hesitant to call them copper, because the ones that were on the car are silverish. After going to four different parts houses, I have found two things out: 1. They don't have many different sizes of brake line crush washers 2. The people that work there were put there by God to keep them from working in a mechanics shop. I guess its off to the dealer.

My original seals were aluminum. The replacements that I bought from the dealer were copper. (For what they charged, they should have been gold.) And they had to order those!!!

From what I have heard, the copper and soft aluminum washers are pretty much interchangable. In fact, I have never been able to find the soft aluminum, even at the dealer.
Your experience with a few parts guys explains why I mentioned calling for "brake" washers. Many of those guys are hired to look things up on the computer and operate the cash registers. I call them "cashiers" . In all fairness, that is what they pay for and get. We sometimes make the mistaken impression that the folks that hire them want them to know a lot about cars. That is why I take most of my parts business to a couple of small independents, both within a mile from my house.

Try this thread Carrameow started. There's some links to websites where you can buy 110 piece sets for about five bucks. Granted they're not metric but I'm sure you could make them work.

Volkswagon dealers usually have a stock on hand to service their cars. Not cheap but they have them. Hopefully in the sizes you need.
