Utah Friend Strikes Again

I'm sure a few have already seen this, a nice beige 84 300d on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-MERCEDES-300D-TURBO-DIESEL-ALL-RECORDS-120PIX_W0QQitemZ230078645084QQihZ013QQcategoryZ6330QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Item number: 230078645084

Same guy that sold the decent red one last week for $7000+ and it was a repaint!

My prediction is 7.5-8k for this one. Looks nice and this guy is good and getting a lot of bidders. I guess the trick is a picture of every angle and a brief description. Oh well, at least this one look decently nice, except for the pinkamino.

Anyone see any other issues besides the mismatched driver side fender and door? Could be a repaint, one picture of the door jamb shows either taping or the contact point, but I'm not an expert. Also the cracked headlight bezels and running pretty hot with a little high oil pressure, especially strange with all that snow in the background.

Predictions on price?

The idle looks a little high, ziptied on A/C foam, Kalifornia version and green coolant is low.

why are the taillights all red? shouldn't the turn signals be orange? aftermarket?

what are all the holes on the driver fender well?

the passenger side front door and fender look mismatched (compared to rear door) just like the driver side. maybe one half of the car was repainted (who knows which)

Wheels are freshly painted. Left front wheel recently balanced.

That's a heck of a big weight on the spare.

Do 617s idle that high?

After all that detailing of the engine bay, what's 2 minutes to suction out the old brake fluid and add fresh fluid?

I think it will go to 6500. As for the gauge readings, I can't believe ho wmuch stock some of you put in that. My car (300SD) runs at 2 bar and 100C at hot idle, but does that mean anything? Not since the Raytek thermometer gun said 79C at the cyl head when the gauge read 100. Readings around 1.5-2.5 bar and 80-100C in pics merely tell me that the gauges aren't broken. There's more variance here than you think.

Does that mean I'd pay 6500? No, I personally think a pinkamino 300D is worth closer to three figures, but I've never understood the "diss" factor when someone has a nice one for sale. Dealer or not...

Finding flaws in cream puffs keeps the wits sharp to find the diamond among three-figure cars.

The temp gauge might be a personal thing. I can't put faith in variance with as many of these cars as I've seen. My money says something's not right with a 617 showing 90*C with snow in the background. Maybe he ran it at full throttle for 10 miles to get to that spot. Maybe it just needs a connector pushed in all the way. If you tell me your car's been that way for years, I believe you and I'll probably put off getting it checked. This seller knows nothing about this car so I hope things are in better shape than not broken if I'm paying a premium for it.

To me, it's because some of us have ethics. There are people out there that buy a 1k car, throw on a $200 paint job, spend $150 to get it detailed, and are selling them for 7k. Understanding the whole capitalism thing and all, it's not a bad way to do business in the short term. However, word will get out, and buisness will be hurt long term. Until he changes his user name, and then all is good again.

Just my two cents... Hey, where's the two cent smilie??? I thought it used to be here?

Looks like a decent car. OMG the 20 year old radiator has green coolant in it! It will fail any second now! No one buy it, it's a ticking time bomb! The block is so corroded because of the green coolant that any second now a connecting rod will go through it!!!!1111111111 If his 500 dollar paint jobs and spray painted wheels are netting him an extra 3 grand a car, well good for him.

http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=10

What vehicles use Zerex G-05 in the factory fill and what is the dye color?
1984 Mercedes and beyond (light yellow)
1990 Deere and Company vehicles and beyond (green)
2001 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep and beyond (orange)
2002 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury trucks and SUVS and beyond (yellow)
2003 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury automobiles and beyond (yellow)

What is the difference between these products?
All products use the Zerex G-05 formulation. The only difference is the dye color.

does this mean that someone could have green coolant and it still be G-05?
im NOT saying that this car has green G-05 or the wrong green stuff. im just wondering if anyone has used green G-05. hmmm

looks to be ok. but the high idle, low oil pressure and hot temp have me worried. if you were to idle it back down to were it should be i bet the oil pressure would be really low. as for the high temp. when i first got me 300D until a week or so later, that tank was empty, and it still ran just a little above 80. Filled it up, runs the same temp, so somthing else is not right
