ULSD Gelling Issues??

Alright, I think I've narrowed down the problem...

The 300D wouldn't even spew out smoke today, nothing. Just cranked, but no start. Last year it always started fine, even in colder temps. The GP's are ok too. I've read of some other people having problems as well...is this new ULSD more prone to gelling? My car would crank and crank, and even with a new battery, hot plugs, and two new filters, the fuel in the filters is ok, but it just won't even chug...no smoke or anything.

Anyone else in the NE having issues?

Do you have a clear prefilter? If so take a look at what's happening. ULSD shouldn't gel any more than LSD. In fact I think it should gel even less because of its lower aromatic content.

Here is interesting article on ULSD I found. Basically since it is so new they haven't done enough testing for proper additives to prevent geling.

Full page articles pg 1, pg 2 and pg 3.

Its been pretty cold here lately and I havn't had any issues. No additives either, well unless you count the last little bit of summer blend Power Service I poured in. But its the summer stuff so it shouldn't stop gelling.

Hah

That was the culprit. I place a heating pad on top of the cold fuel lines, and low and behold it started without any issue at all. It definitely was a bad load of fuel. It was a different station than usual, so it was to be expected.

I wonder if this could also be causing the "shakes" or loping on my car. Although, it still does it warmed up.

It's been bitter cold here in Denver, and my regular blend of D2 (ULSD) and biodiesel has not had any issues. I doubt ULSD will gel above -10F - my B50 works just great.

Where I work (big oil), we have a specs to meet for cloud and pour point for winter blends. These have not changed with the introduction of ULSD. I know, I take care of the equipment that measures the temperature at which this happens. I can tell you the ULSD we make has a pour point of at least a -20F. Usually lower. With any additive, this should go down considerably.
That is just here in the middle of the US of A.
We have had some cold lately, not down to 0 yet but in the low teens and I have had no problems.
