Twin Turbo?

I saw a smart car turbo on ebay(real cute small thing) the other day and it got me thinking. Anyone done a twin turbo conversion for the 617?

There is just enough room to do it, but the question is why do it other than for bragging rites? Parallel or sequential turbos have all been surpassed and replaced by VGT technology. Compound turbos don't make sense unless you plan on running 25+ psi of boost.

I'd love to do that. Sounds like fun, and yes mainly for bragging rights.

I hear the VGTs have a history of clogging up. I'd rather live with the lag of a bigger turbo and more boost that the complexities and drawbacks of twins any day.

Forcedinduction has a VNT on his 617. I'm sure he will let us know if it clogs. It would be nice to have boost off the line.

I've heard of clogging on the VW TDI's.... the reason they say it happens is because of easy driving... if you drive it hard all of the built up soot will burn off and all is well :)

I have no personal experience on this... but thats what I've heard over on the TDIClub forums.

i thought twin turbos were mainly for V configured engines (one for each side) so that you have less plumbing for the boost to go through, and sequential turbos were for more power through the entire range

That too but my friend has a Supera with twins.. Can't rember the term but they are set up so 3 cylinder feed one... So I guess not compounded. That on a 617 is impossible since its an odd number.. Why 5 cylinder.. WHY???

Plus the VNT is better in most or all aspects.

tt would be nice but 1 turbo and a belt driven supercharger would be fun

typically a small one handles the load until a bigger one spools up.

Unless you are planning on running over 30psi of boost, twin turbos would be a waste. If you want minimal boost lag, VNT turbo all the way! :D

So if VNT turbos are so great, why did MB put THREE turbos on the upcoming SLK320CDI?

V6 engine. Two small VNT turbo's on the sides and one big one in the middle.

Yeah, that makes sense. But it's still more than one :P

Thats really not worth it. The finns have done it but they are making enough power to overcome superchargers power robbing feature. A big ass holset and a good sized SC would work.. but why? VNT is better

SLK320CDI??? Where I will really sell my soul for one of those
