Jeep implant

Well I got the jeep today, got the old and trans out and working on getting the MB in, its a tight fit thats for sure not 100 precent it will work but Im guna do everything I can to make it work, the front sump has been a major issue if not for that it would fit right in, but it interferes with the stearing linkage and the rod that keeps the front axal centered, they make a drop pitman arm for lifted jeeps that drops it about 4 inches wich should give me more then enought room and I just need to make a longer bracket for the centering bar so that shouldnt be all that bad, here are a few pictures of it so far its siting on wood block on the frame just to see if it would come close to fitting, it will be a little bit lower in the frame and possible a little farther back in I need to (may have to beat in the fire wall a little aroudn the oil filter housing but no big deal) I dont plan on making it 4 wheel drive again, I have no need to and dont have the will too, so I will probably end up cutting the front axal tube and removing the diff all together it will give allot more clearance but all in all it looks like its guna work, I had my doughts at first with the fan on the front its way to long but with it off and it look like were guna have to more the bottom of the radiator support forward about 1/2 inch so you can actally change the belts without puling the engine but other then that going pretty smoothly even thouhg its very early in the game

Cool project; I'd love to drop one of those into an old Series Land Rover.

You have clearance issues though. Look at the oil filter housing - when the engine is idling its going to be banging against the side of the engine bay. What are your plans for a cooling fan?

yeah, you dont want to run it with the oil pan that way. you better check the pump carefully too. it could be damaged.

very tight fit as noted in above post. fan issues.

i am pretty surprised that the inline six that was put in those jeeps would fit and the 617 be so tight!

I think you need about a 3" suspension lift.

And a hammer to clear the way for the oil filter.

And an electric pusher fan.

You'll make it! Don't let the machine defeat you!

I do a lot of work on Jeeps too. you need to keep the track bar and the steering link parallel, if you use a drop pitman arm you need to move the track bar down the same amount. nice project.

Jeep Inplant

Im guna have to do a little modification to the fire wall around the oil filter housing (big hammer) but that shouldnt be a big deal, the oil pan is a beat up piece of junk, the dumb junk yard I got it from beat the heck out of it trying to get the motor out the also bent the 2/3 valve bracket beond repair, knocked a small hole in the valve cover and cut the speedo cable off so I have a few repairs to do before its all done hopefully they didnt break anything expensive inside I ran it on the floor and it had oil pressure so hopefully noting is damaged. there's allot of room infront of the radiator/condensor so I shouldnt have a problem putting a fun up there, I plan on droping the track bar and the pitman arm to clear the pan and probalby cut the front diff out and make it a solid axal (anyone know what a 2wd jeep front axal looks like) its guna be close to the hood but it should make it and it should have plenty of room for the front axal it fits nicely behind the front sump if they made these things rear sump it would fit like a dream but I guess we cant have everything I cant beleve there isnt more room in there I figured the 4.0 would be longer if not around the same size as a 3.0 diesel but I guess not this is an 86 wich never had the 4.0 they didnt have it till 87 but as far as I can tell all the body parts are the same unles they had a different fire wall but either way we can make anyting work with enough time, a big hamerl, a torch. Thanks for all your positive input any idea's or sugestions would be apreciated

Why don't you make a front sump pan? You can add an extension to your oil pump pick-up to move it forward. You could probably cut the old pan off the flange and just rotate it 180 deg. and weld it back on.

extending the oil pump pickup may not be feasible on the benz oil pump.

also it might be possible to get a 2wd front axle from a postal jeep or possibly a pickup (were they offered with 2wd?)

it might be a little wile before its all done but I will let you know how she goes when I am done, as for the oil pan it already is a front sump, I would need a rear sump pan and I dont think without allot of work it could be done if it wernt a cast aluminum pan it would be much easier I think it will be easier to just move the stearing components they make pieces to do that, also I think our local junk yard has a 2 wheel drive jeep truck (the one that looks like the S10) so Im guan get the front axal out of it so I dont have to cut on the one thats in my jeep to make it a 2 wheel drive axal all in all I think its guna work I wasnt sure when we first started to drop it in, with the fan and the stearing hooked up no way it will fit but with those 2 things moved its snug but a good fit I know the power stearing bracket and pump will fit and I think I can even fit the A/C back in there its guna be close to the stearing gear box but I think it will fit if not no big deal its got 4 windows, Im excited to see how well it does it should be pretty snappy its around the same weight at the car it came out of and with the 4/4 gone it may even be a little lighter, still not sure what rear end gears it has I need to look at the tag on it and find out. I was worried the diesel would be to heavy for it but with just the engine the front suspentoin is siting higher then it should so hopefully the trans will add enough to bring it back down to around correct ride height

Those Cherokee's came in 2wd and I think all that needs to be done is wap the solid front axle with a solid front axle from a 2wd. Just make sure you get a complete setup with the brakes an everything. A lot of guyz convert their 2wd to 4wd just by adding a transfer case and an axles from a 4wd cherokee.

That way youll drop about 100lbs from you truck and have more clearance due to the pumpkin no being there.

jeep inplant

ya from what Ive read there basically the same axal just one has shafts and a diff and the other is just a tube all the way across Ill call or run out if I have time tomarrow and see if that axal is any good, if not Im sure I could find someone with a 2 wheel drive jeep that wants to make it 4 wheel drive and trade them, not to many people out there who want to go the other way
