Fuel System in my 82 240D

I recently bought an 82 240D. This is my first experience into driving Mercedes and my first experience with diesels. Suffice it to say I am hooked.

The last time out with the car I barely made it home. Coming up the long hill to the house I had to shift down to second and then I climbed the last stage I in first. It started again the next day but would not keep running. Subsequent efforts to start it failed.

I'm guessing it is a fuel problem, probably clogged filter. BUT! This beast has TWO spin on fuel filters. Every parts web site I visit shows only one. In another place on this forum I saw a drawing of a fuel system that showed an in-line filter and one spin on.

Under the hood I find a white spin on with a clear plastic bottom on the driver side near the front of the engine compartment. From that the fuel line leads to another spin on near the manifold that leads to the injectors.

So what gives? It makes no sense to me to have two of the same size filters in the system. Why don't the parts sites show two filters for this car?

sounds to me like you have 1 oil filter and 1 oil/water seperator. Does it have a make and part# on it? that may help. power loss is most likely just a clogged filter.

Somebody probably added a second water blocking filter to your car. Several members here have done the same thing. You can replace that filter too or just re-plumb it back to original. Don’t forget to replace the small prefilter too.

That's an aftermarket add-on water separator, not original equipment.

I think of course he means fuel filter, and fuel/water separator. And that does sound like what you have.....

The white spin on filter is probably a RAYCOR brand. It was both a fuel filter and water separator. Was very effcient to the point of plugging up too often! I sold alot of these in the late 80's. By the early 90's I got paid again to remove them! Back then the storage tanks at stations collected water and the filter provided some protection. Nowadays the water problem is not really an issue. In fact some small amount of water will keep the valves clean in a diesel! Get rid of it all together or remove the filter insert in it and leave it there.

Update and Question

Thanks, gang. Ii turns out I have a Racor R12S filter (water separator?) and a GUD Filter Z213. I don't see the in-line filter but I haven't looked that closely for it. Is it in the engine compartment or under the car?

Living on Guam, while very nice in many ways, can be a pain in the butt if you don't drive a Japanese car. Almost all parts for the Mercedes have to be ordered on-line. Do you know of a good site with quick US Postal Service delivery? UPS and FedEx are useless for shipping to Guam but the post office gives stellar service.

In the eng. compartment in front of the injec. pump. Its clear plastic. Maybe was removed to add these other filters?

Primary filter is just to rear of primer pump. Follow fuel line from metal line at firewall.
