My first valve job on a MB diesel...

So I did the first valve job today. Not overly hard. Once I got the hand of it things went super quick. I did have a third hand doing the feeler. I also did a booboo. Turned it over using camshaft bolt. No harm done thank god. What bolt am I supposed to turn it over with other wise?

The car runs SOOOO much better now. Cranked over real easy and so much less smoke. There is still a fair amount but it was nothing like before. I still have an idle issue until its warm but I'm fairly certain its a fuel delivery problem. Probably the tank screen. I have air in the lines and I'm not quite sure where its coming from. I tightened everything down pre primary fuel filter and it appears to still allow air inside. Going to replace the hose next (and blow out the screen by swapping the lines) when I run to the gas station for a fill up in a little bit. Fun Fun.

Thanks to DG for the pictorial. I found that using a needle nose plier to hold the spring did wonders. Also doing all intake first then exhaust made things go quicker.

I prefer to use a "bump" starter available at most auto part stores, around $15.00. Also used to "pop" on belts. However, the P/S will work, as noted. I hear.

Just too clarify....a "valve job" is taking the valves out for grinding along with the seats. You did a "valve adjustment" Hopefully you wont need a "valve job" for a while.

I wish that were true. The adjustment was phase 1. 332k miles and anything that can wear is to worn. Did the bearings today and valve adjustment. Brake booster is shot as well I think. Can't pull a vacuum on it with the mighty vac.

Well if you need a "valve job" its really not that hard, the trick is getting your hands on the "tool" and someone to help you along with the first valve and seat.
the only parts might only amount to seals, $10+- A mechanic friend of mine did that for me.
