Secondary Fuel Filter Maintenance

84 & 85 300D. What is the recommended interval for replacing the secondary, spin-on fuel filter? 3000 miles or when you start noticing loss of power, whichever comes first?

I think the recommended interval is 30,000 miles, however, in practice, they need to be changed only when they start affecting the power. After you "feel" the power loss due to a clogged filter once, you will know how it feels. Always carry spares, you never know when you may need one.

3000 is way too soon. I'd go with Craig and say 30,000miles or when it starts to affect power.

The same. It's even more easy because it's clear so you can see when it's clogged.

depends on what you run for fuel. I run veggy, so I carry spares with. Iv'e gotten from 1500- over 5k on them. the present one is around 5k right now, and no indications of clogging.

and I carry a full can of sea-foam, or a qt of tranny fluid to fill the filter with,(smoke screen!) as well as a wrench for it and a screwdriver for the inline.

Just wondering because I seem to be not getting as much umph on my 85 as I did this summer when I changed the filter and I don't think I have even 5k on it. Does lack of valve adjustment affect the performance too?

Not sure if valve has aver been adjusted on this car. What was the interval for adjustment again?

When I adjusted my valves on my new-to-me 300cd, it smoothed out the idle and increased performance quite a bit. While you are at it, with the valve cover off and all you can measure the chain stretch. This will give you a very good idea of how worn the rest of the engine is. I believe chain stretch can be compensated for with offset woodruff keys up to about 10*. I had planned on replacing my chain (expecting the worst) but found to my glee that it was only stretched barely 2*. There were stickys with links to wonderful explanations and pix of a whole bunch of maintenance procedures at the top of this forum but I have no idea where they went! Anyone know what happened to all that info?
