81 240D Speedometer quit
I have an 81 240D with 148,000 miles. My speedometer just quit last week and I'd like some tips on what/where I should look to repair it. Appreciate any help.

If you can live without it for a couple weeks, I've read that these guys do a really good job:
http://www.speedometer.com/ That's presuming that the guage is at fault and not the cable... |

Most likely, it is the cable. Mine quit last week and the replacement just got here today. I have an 83 300D and the part # is 123 542 82 07. your's might be the same but I am not positive. I got mine from a MB parts place in orlando Fl. through a mechanic there. Maybe check ebay. I paid $40. for mine and that included shipping. Looks pretty straight forward and easy to install, I'll let you know after the rain stops.

The speedo cable probably broke. I had to replace mine on my 240 a few months ago, it's an easy fix. You can easily check to see if the cable is broken. Pull the instrument cluster out. Disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the speedo. You'll see a square ended cable sticking out, pull on it. If you can pull the cable out it's broken if not then something else has gone awry. I bet it's the cable though.
