The Isuzu Trooper II was availible in the US through 1986, with a 2.2L. 80 hp. turbo diesel.
About 12 years ago, a neighbor had an early '80s Rebadged Isuzu pickup called a Chevy Luv, with the 58 hp. 2.2 non-turbo diesel, He liked the truck but some diesel-specific parts were getting hard to find. As I recall, he had bypassed the electronic glowplug timer because he couldn't get a replacement.
If you're thinking about getting an early Trooper, the door and rear gate hinges are weak spots, and the diesel engine has a timing belt that requires periodic replacement, so ask the seller when it was last changed.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I have an Isuzu diesel pickup. Good truck, and good engine, however it is getting harder to find parts. The 5 speed is considered less desirable than the 4 speed. (5 speed can have bearing failures if mistreated or improperly maintained). Probably not too many of these trucks survive in the rust belt.

I have a non-turbo version of this engine that I put in my 1991 Sonoma. Very tough engine. It has about 540,000 kms on it now. I hooked the glow plugs up manually also. Great on fuel. Not much power. Mine came from a Chev S10, so it has some differences from the Isuzu truck version, like a separate vacuum pump, so you can use whatever alternator you want, like a cheap GM style. I've also got power steering, and the S10 used the rather bullet-proof Borg-Warner transmission. I've read about the Isuzu transmission failing often enough, but honestly not with the BW, especially with only 58hp going through it. I believe the S10 version also has a different oil pan from the Isuzu version, to match the different cross-member.

I have a smoking one on the shop floor (I believe it was my fault), the one in the truck now, and one with only 150,000 kms on it, according to the guy I bought it from. Like anything old, it never hurts to have spares.

Very common here in India, the G3 turbo 2.4L version has almost the same parts as the OM616, basically Isuzu copied the OM616 down to a plumb, only difference is that its a better revver than the OM616. They are quite reliable as well and in Philippines, they are the engine of choice on Jeepneys.

That would be a cool runabout truck. Make sure we get first dibs on it when you are ready to sell it...

I have a 84 Isuzu P'up 2.2 Diesel, 4 speed manual. Has over 500,000 when the odmenter broke, I would guess in the 520,000 range. Engine just runs and runs and runs, very little work done. Would buy a new one today, if they start importing again.

4BJ and C223 engines. Both great!
Don't forget about the Holden Jackaroo.
I am the original owner of my Trooper which is in pristine condition. Goes to show that almost any car can be preserved with the right maintenance.

With the amount of jeepneys plying Manila, I can say that's a lot!

I actually put the diesel engine of the isuzu trooper of my wife's granddad into his gas trooper. he wrecked the diesel on a deer. he swears by that engine. it sat for 2 years and started right up after we put it in. wiring harness was a bit of a pain, and the motormounts were different from the gas trooper. it fit though. I believe they really like them in south america, which is where most of them ended up. people would buy them and ship them there. I'm sure they run veg oil in them there.

I'm guessing that more than 50% of vehicles in Asia are diesel. Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Hino, and many others produce diesel cars and trucks world wide. We are a bit sheltered here with diesels.

As far as I know, it seems only MB and VW are the ones presently selling diesel cars in the US.

Although I am hearing more about new diesels coming to the market...... I think thats a good thing.
