MB Diesel powered projects ?

Seeing the thread about that cherokee make me wonder how many are running MB Powered Cars and trucks ...

Anybody got links to such hybrids ?

Put a 616 in my old Series Land Rover a few years ago. Fits well and pushes the truck around pretty well.

Very reliable and it gets 25mph to boot.

What tranny did you mount it to?

How did you mount the engine within the engine bay?

I have seen Mercedesrover's install, and the adapter rings he manufactures, and they are first class. I know he used the original LR transmission. I have been considering installing a 5 cyl TD in a 109

Like Terry says, I used the original Land Rover transmission mated with an adapter plate that I now manufacture and sell. As a matter if fact, I just sold out of the latest batch last night. The adapters are 6061 T-6 aluminum.

The motor mounts are homemade and fairly easy if you're handy with a welder.

Here's a picture of the adapters all machined and before the studs are installed.

By the way, that second picture is from a trip this truck to Newfoundland and Labrador last summer. Never missed a beat!

Beautiful Rover, Jim! I've always liked the look of those old Rovers. If I weren't a Scout head, I'd probably get one myself. I'd like to build a Scout 800 w/Cummins 4BT but unfortunately that's a long way down the list

Thanks, Yankee. Hey, why not a Nissan SD33T diesel? There was a running engine still in a truck that went on Ebay not too long ago, right here in Cornwall. Not a bad engine with a turbo on it.

Those SD33T's are damn good engines, the Scout II's and Terra's with them are hard to find. We had a 25' IH 500 box truck at work that was a Nissan re-badge with the same engine. 350K without touching the engine, other than L.O.F.

As to why not? No real reason other than to be different I've done some real preliminary measurements and I think the 4BT might fit in the old 800 body with less mods than the SD33, but measurements were done at different times and I lost my notes

Although if I don't get the original 196 running in my current project (it was sitting a loooooong time and not prepared for it by the PO) it may speed the conversion process up a bit.

Would a 617 fit in a Range Rover Classic? I happen to have a spare '89 RRC...

Nobody makes an adapter to the ZF auto that I know of. Yours doesn't have a LT77, does it? If so, my adapter will work but I don't think 120hp will be enough to push that big ol' RRC down the road anyway.

I wonder about putting my spare 617Turbo into my IH Travelall... anybody make adapter plates for THAT tranny?
Hmm, perhaps keep the MB tranny, it's gotta be better than the IH original 72 model one... 4speed to boot!

You can find mention of adapters on websites from Europe for different aplications but I haven't heard of anyone in the States having any luck getting one here.

I too would love to see a 617 in a Scout II. I happen to have a 78? sitting in Pa. at my sons house collecting dust. I got it dirt Cheap and the floors and rockers were already done. Living down south now and just don't have the time.

My 800 has some extra < ahem> ventilation issues on it as well. I got it free (read saved it from the crusher) from the former groundskeeper on an estate in Weston, CT. They used it to pull a 12' gang reel mower and run errands in the winter. It's got 20K HARD miles on it. It'll never be a show truck, but my sons (and daughter too if she's interested) and I will have a lot of fun fixing it and hopefully driving it.
