B99.9% Bio Diesel at the pump in San Diego

did a brief search, didn't see any one post this, you can now get B99.9% bio diesel in san diego, fortunately for me i had to pull my tank to fix a leak at the neck had it cleaned wile it was out so i don't have to worry about filter contamination, on my second tank this week, performance seems same as with petroleum diesel, smoke is less, fuel economy will be measured as time permits. if you see the site below, there are other in southern california.

Why is Bio still so expensive now that diesel prices going down, saw regular diesel for $2.69, Bio is $3.25?

biodiesel is not the same thing as diesel, therefore the price of one is in no way related to the other

Huh? They are both diesel fuels. One with a price premium due to demand and value. But it's sooo much cheaper to make it yourself, my brew costs me $0.50 per gallon in materials.

Carrots and Cucumbers are both vegetables, but their prices aren't exactly interconnected.

Brewing your own is cheap, but what about the quality and variances between batches. I've brewed some good beer and I've brewed some really, really crappy beer. Taking risks on my palette is a little easier on the wallet than causing major engine damage to my 603.

B99 at a commercial pump in the Bay Area, CA is equalivent to the cost you quoted Carson. That fuel is made using rapeseed (sp?) oil in the Reno NV area I believe.

B99 has always been a premium here except when crude passed $75 a barrel for a brief time last spring and D2 hit $3.699.

Cheaper Bio Diesel

Try buying it in bulk. I know of a company that buys tankers of it at a time and I think they pay about 19 cents per pound. They use it for a solvent not a fuel, but it burns the same.

The station I buy it from brings it in by rail. What is that 10,000 gals? 15K?

At 10K gals that would last me 300,000 miles in my 99 which with my 110 mile a day commute (29,150 mi/yr) would last me 10.29 years........at .19 per pound and 10K gals it would cost a lot......water weighs 8lb per gal, bio is probably heavier. For easy math at 10lbs/gal it would be 1.90 a gal or $19,000 out of pocket. Ah...you'd have to rent the rail car for 10 years and would need a rail spur on your side yard too.....

Bulk could save you 25 cents or more on the gallon. Usually "bulk" means 110 gallons and above, but more often it would mean a 250 gallon plastic cube.

Just to set the record straight, and trying not to shoot holes in your good argument, but the per gallon weights are: gas ~6.1 lbs, dinodiesel ~7 lbs, biodiesel 7.35, and water ~8.3. These numbers are rough, and temperature dependent, but are close.
(source: http://bioenergy.ornl.gov/papers/misc/energy_conv.html)

Cost of biodiesel, is a combination of the base veg oil price and supply/demand. The higher price is due to market forces. I am willing to pay a slight premium for biod, so I am helping to force the cost up. Sorry about that
