How and what do you measure piston ring land gaps
Hi,
I'm interested in measuring my piston ring land gaps. I have a set of pistons out of the engine, but not 100% sure how or what to measure. The MB shop manual specifies gap clearance of piston rings and side clearance. i.e. gap clearance for groove 1 should be 0.20-0.40 when new and a wear limit of 1.5. while the side clearance for groove 1 when new is 0.110-0.142 with a wear limit of 0.20 Question 1 is groove 1 the highest groove closest to the piston top? Question 2 what units of measurement are they using foe the gap clearance of 0.20-0.40? and where is this measured. What unit of measurement are they using for the wear limit of 1.5? Question 3 same as question 2 but for side clearance. Thanks Marty

Grove #1 is the top grove......
Metric units of measure.....mm (millimeters) Gap is measured when ring is off of piston......inserted in cylinder......and gap measured......usually done with new rings, before assembly..... side clearance is measured between the ring and the top of the ring grove.....ring grove clean, measure clearance between ring and top of ring grove..... use feeler gages for all.....
