1995 e300 poor performance when cold

Engine starts when cold and runs fine at idle. Glow plug light on dash comes on the goes out after 8-10 seconds. Engine starts immediately and runs fine. Starting to accelerate is where the problem occurs. The engine bogs down as though some of the cyclinders are not firing. Once the engine is warm [15/20 minutes] the car runs fine. it only happens if the car is cold and has not been running for 15-20 minutes. The glow plugs were just replaced about 2000 miles ago.

It may be a resonator flap issue. Has it ever been cleaned?

mjpay 02-01-2007 04:17 PM

Never been cleaned since I 've own the car. Its on the air intake correct?

mjpay 02-01-2007 04:20 PM

How does one go about cleaning this valve?

See #8 on the diagram. I'm not sure if there are also flaps in #77 or not? Am more familar with my 606 Turbo model than yours.

Is this new behavior? My '96 is drivable when the engine is cold, but barely so as it's a much more pronounced turd. It takes at least five minutes of running before I'd want to enter a highway.

Matt....you sound like a man who is ready to buy a turbo!:D

The car really struggles to go then finally runs but smokes as though the glow plugs were not working, similiar to the symptom before the glow plugs were changed since at startup the car smoked until it warmed up. That does not occur now at startup but if the car is not warmed up it will smoke and bog when one tries to accelerate.

I'll check the resonance valve as described by terry

I did, a nice variable vane unit. Unfortunately, I can't seem to remove it from its packaging without arousing the ire of others.

But while mine is indeed pretty slow when cold, it sounds like the original poster has a problem. It should be drivable.
