1980 300sd A/C Servo

The heater is no longer working on my 1980 300sd again. AC seems OK. My mechanic said it is too expensive to rebuild this system but I was thinking that it might just need a servo (read this among postings found in a search of this site).

My thought is to go to the junk yard and try to find an aluminum servo and take it to the mechanic. Trouble is that I don't know what one looks like or where it is located on the car. Also would not know how to determine if the one I find (if any) is in good operating condition.

Does this sound like something that would be worthwhile.

A manual system would be an excellent alternative for me because the manual system on my 240d never fails but I would have no idea how to set this up or where to find a kit if such a thing is available. Is there a kit available to do this conversion?

Thanks

if its like the 80 300d i have, then it will have about 8 vacuum lines and an electrical harness going to it too. but im not sure if our cars are the same.

i bypassed mine for the time being, because it was leaking and had a huge draw on the battery when ignition was off. im looking for one now myself.just cant afford buying a $600 replacement right now.

Good luck finding an alu body ACCII in a junk yard!!!

the Servos from W107, W123, and W116 are the same for all the models.

Transforming your system to manual is a major undertaking even if you have a complete donor car (in this case only a 280SE or a 450SEL from 1972-1976).

another alternative is the digital upgrade, but it is a 700bucks toy...

Sounds like anything but a used Servo is not worthwhile. I will start browsing the junk yards next week.

Thanks

I opened the hood this evening and am sure I found the Servo. It had a red part on the bottom with hoses running into it and the top part had a very large number wires running into it. Looks like it will be very easy to identify and remove in the junk yard.

Will the aluminum ones be painted black or will they be easy to tell from the black on that is in my car?

Thanks

The aluminum one I purchased was not painted. Only the lower portion is aluminum on mine. It's the part that typically cracks on the plastic version.

DCM, you should be able to find it easy enough in a parts yard. the top portion look pretty much the same. the location of the aux water pump bracket might differ. i have seen the bottom either shiny unpainted aluminum and one that was painted black. just make sure it is not the black plastic bottom.

i just wanted to put it out that if anyone stumbles on this thread and has one to offer up, please dont be afraid to let us know, there are a couple of us on the forum looking for a used servo.
