prep for road trip - anythingelse?

In a couple weeks I'll be going on my first big road trip in the 300SD. Just Philly to Mystic, CT - not much of a road trip but easily twice as far as I've gone so far. It's about a five hour drive.

Here's my checklist:
check fuel filters
belts - needs power steering pump belt, probably do alternator too
extra quart of oil just in case
jug of antifreeze just in case
refill wiper fluid

Anything else? I'll have new rotors, calipers, and pads in the front as of this Saturday and I adjusted the valves last weekend.

I have made that trip in the SDL going the other way a couple of times. Just make sure the stuff that will leave you stranded is in good shape, like belts, hoses, your tires should up to pressure and decent, etc. If your fuel filters are questonable I'd just change them, changing a fuel filter on the side of the road would really suck.

Don't forget to check the pressure in the spare!

What time of day or night will you be traveling? Lights, including dash and console all OK? Trouble light for inspection or work after dark?

It will be night driving. My dash lights are as bright as they can be - not too bright - all other lights are ok and I have a flashlight in the car. I'm going to change the belts I mentioned. I think my hoses are ok, but by then I'll be through my second tank of B20. I can already see some gunk in my primary filter, so I'll probably change both filters. Do you think I should change the fuel hoses? It's only B20... I think my radiator hoses are ok. Any other hoses I should check?

Keep your old belts in the trunk just in case. I went on a 4k road trip this summer from central OK to San Francisco and coming back, through, Denver, my compressor seized and took one of my fan belts with it. Thank you Mercedes engineers that put two belts on that thing! I wasn't aware of it taking out a fan belt till I got home but it was about two in the a.m. when it happened and I was out in the middle of nowhere. They were brand new belts too and I remembered the old ones, unfortunately it was after I was about two hours away from home. I got lucky, you might not!

Your list looks pretty good. I drive six hours one way every week in my 300TD. I alternate working between Duluth, MN and Madison, WI. I've been doing it since last September and I have yet to have a problem. I am very meticulous about maintaining the car though.

If you're on the road a lot an AAA membership might be another good idea. Safe Travels!

I thought about bringing some pretzels but decided to snatch the Liberty Bell and tie it to my roof.

dont say that too loud, the current administration might take that as anti-american, and a threat.

seriously though, when was your transmission last serviced? take some hand cleaner just in case you have some road side work to pull off in the middle of the night.

Cool It's that time of year....!!!

With the temperatures as low as they have been, I would take along a set of Jumper Cables......

As well as a spare pair of fuel filters.....and some of any fuel additive that you prefer, as long as it has some anti gel properties....

Don't forget coffee, and some warm clothing and shoes .....just in case.....

Don't forget to keep a wrench in the trunk too fit the fuel filter nut also a pair of rubber gloves and a pint of CLEAN diesel (or Moly Purge) to fill the new filter, saves allot of pumping.

Bring a good and bright flashlite and a warm coat as well as a cellphone. I would also look into the spare and tire changine equipment. Yes, by all means get or bring a set of jumper cables. A small travel type toolbox with electrical tape and assorted screwdrivers and necessities wouldn't hurt either! Say hello to Mystic for me! I used to live there in 1968.

one quart of oil is not enough really, if you are going to bother to bring oil, get at least 3 quarts. one wouldn't even bring the oil level up to full from low. I keep a gallon of syn Rotella in my trunk all the time, and I don't really have oil consumption problems. a set of 10,13,14,17 wrenches , and a spare glow plug or two not a bad idea, I usually have a 600Amp Battery jump box in the car as well.

I still say a gallon of oil is a good bet.
but I would also take a cardboard box to sit on... changing tire on cold wet ground = no fun!
