excessive shake at idle...sometimes?

I have an occasional excessive engine shake at idle. It does not happen all the time but usually occurs when the engine is warmed up...and most often just after I have exited from the interstate (70-75 mph) and stop at the light off the exit ramp. I have read allot of posts regarding excessive engine shake and I am leaning towards the rack damper. However, could be the engine shocks?

Overall, the engine has good power, no smoke, and other than this infrequent issue appears to be quite strong.

Any advice?

Check filters, engine and tranny mounts, engine shocks, rack damper, and also check the injectors. Could be a little crud causing problems. Do a diesel purge. Check fuel lines for cracks and weeping.

Thanks for the advise. I have new filters and fuel lines. So, I will adjust the rack damper first and then as follows:

2) check engine shocks, mounts, and tranny mounts.
3) diesel purge
4) injectors if necessary.

I will let you know how it goes.

I'm experiencing a similar problem in the '84 115,000 miles. Also, rough idle unless I add a bit of throttle. Use name brand fuel. Have done the purge thing, albeit 20,000 miles ago. Will check for leaks. I understand the RD bolt needs attention if you're idle flucuates, vs. shakes. I replaced it on the SD a bit ago. All filters tended to, this is my baby. Will keep an eye on this thread.

excessive shake at idle...sometimes?

Today, I made an effort to fix the excessive shake at idle. I adjusted the Rack damper with a full clockwise turn. It did not make a visable difference. However, I took the old girl for a spin and the excessive shake was a little better...but not quite fixed. I reduced the idle from around 800-850 to 725-750. The excessive shake appears to be gone. I took the old girl for another spin after the adjustment and see no signs of exsessive shake. Also, power is still very good and she still starts right up. I guess I should drive it for about a week or so before I claim victory. But for now the shake is gone...
