It doesn't snow in Sacramento but summers are HOT (105+ sometimes)...thus the need for A/C. Sometimes my E300 decides not to give me cold air through the outside vents and instead sends heated air, it makes for one nasty drive. Also, I have a cabin in Tahoe and go there in the winter when it is snowing.....plus I'm not too certain a 240D could make it "up the hill" judging by its less-than-spectacular performance on a downhill onramp. For the E300 driving up to Tahoe is a piece of cake.

I will have to concede, though, that when I first stepped on that 240's brake pedal it surprised me how little is required to bring it to a stop. My E300's pedal has much more play in it; on the 240 I barely had to press it.

240s can make it fine. I drove my 81 300d up highway 88 last spring and it was a champ, albeit a large drop in power, but certainly managable. You just have to build up speed for the steeper grades. Luckily 80 is pretty mild, nothing a 240 can't handle at least.

they don't have any excess power but that is what gears are for.

I learned to drive on the beach on Dad's 1929 model A Ford at 10 years old
Worst thing I ever drove was an Autocar 10 wheel dump truck with a quad box 16 speed 16 gears and i was still never in the right one out plowing on 95 in the line of plow trucks no power steering either

How about cassette? I don't think Becker ever made an 8-track player.

Over here, if you pass in an automatic vehicle, you're not allowed to drive a manual until you've taken another test. Drivers who take the test in a manual and pass are allowed to drive automatics with no further tuition.

I learnt to drive in a manual, the vast majority of cars in the UK are manual gearboxes.
Nope, and as a result there are fewer and fewer people in the U.S. who actually know how to drive a standard. With the advent of commercial heavy duty automatics it probably won't be long before the commercial trucks are all auto trans.

My father, to his credit, made my brother, sister and I learn to drive on a manual and take our driving tests with a manual. I like the idea that I can drive just about anything you put in front of me.

Doesn`t take long to master the technique of letting the Clutch Peddle out to the friction point, taking your foot off the Brake Peddle and giving it the right amount of fuel as you let the Clutch peddle out.

It will take some practice to get it all coorinated where you after a while don`t think about it and it just comes natural. some people it takes longer than others and some have a mental blockage and never get it down.

The most difficult part is starting on a hill, w/o rolling back before you get her rolling in a forward direction. having a vehicle up close to your rear bumper will make you nervous. then you rev up the engine, let the Clutch out and she bucks and kicks and sometimes kill the engine.

This speeding up the engine and slipping the clutch is what causes excessive wear and will burn the clutch lining and glaze it and the Pressure Plate. then when that happens the Clutch gets grabby and chatters when you let out on the peddle till she is rolling and up to speed.

Do not use the Clutch to hold you on a hill, ie slipping it while in gear to hold the car. this will destroy it.

The best thing to do at a stop light is to take it out of gear and remove your foot from the peddle. this takes the pressure off the Release/throw out bearing and the fingers (springs) on the pressure Plate.

There is no reason a Clutch will not survive 100,000 miles and much longer depending on the operators use and abuse. many different drivers on the same vehicle will also depend on the life of the Clutch.

Here is a cost of the parts. from this site.
1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D Sedan - Clutch & Flywheel - Page 1

If you do the work, then it is a cost of parts and your time. take it to a shop, you pay for labor, mark up on the parts, enviro fees etc...
