Where does oil drain off the top of the head?
Is the rectangular hole where the timing chain is, the only place where oil goes back down through the head? Are there no oil gullies?

Yep. No pushrod holes to go down.

Must be some serious puddling going on when pulling one of those long steep grades in the mountains!

Unless there is a hole(s) hidden in the back that I haven't seen.
EDIT: Could this be a drain hole? |

I think its just that little hole at the back and the timing chain opening, I'd assume that'd be plenty....

It's plenty to get the oil back to the sump, but with the valve cover gasket surface being barely above the "floor," I'm sure this design is one of the reasons the gaskets aren't so good at preventing leaks (that and the fact that there are only four bolts on such a large valve cover, and the gasket that's u-shaped). The engineers could have done a better job in this regard.

i have never had a problem with the gasket leaking back there. keep a good gasket in it and you shouldnt have a prob.

When I did my valve adjustment the cover was on real tight (dealer had done the last one)....when I finished I installed the gasket...torqued it to MB spec...started it...and promptly had 1/4qt of Mobil 1 on the floor of the garage, compliments of the rear of the engine (leaked out by the 4/5 cyl area)....so I loosened it again, reseated it, and tightened it like the dealer had done...started it up, no leaks....

I put mine back on what I call "a liitle more than snug". No leaks yet. I was just surprised how much oil was sitting on the head when I pulled the cover off. my first thought was clogged gulleys, but I couldn't find any. Seems like it gives too much chance for the oil to start getting sucked through valve seals.

the other way they leak is if a knucklehead tightens the bolts so far they warp the valve cover. trying to correct for a gasket that is shot. tom w

The rear of my valve cover is leaking.. I guess I should take it off and put it back on.
