There were quite a few small diesels avaiable during the 80's, as listed above, plus:
Nissan Sentra
Acadian/Chevette
S10/S15
Isuzu I-Mark
VW Rabbit/Jetta/Golf/Dasher
Aformentioned Escort & Tempo/Topaz

I'm sure there are more. These were available in Canada, at least.
