They have been selling them in England and Europe with the Zedec 1.8 tdi engines for years, where they are very popular.

They aren't sold new here in the United States with diesel engines though, as far as I know www.fordvehicles.com see: Ford Focus - Specifications

if memory serves me right. They had mitsubishi diesel engines in them. Very rare but both the escort and the ranger had them as a option back then. Ive seen one in the bay area craigslist about a year back.

Starting in 1984 the Escort could be purchased with a Mazda 2.0-liter diesel engine. Very few people bought them, and they were dropped midway through the 1987 model year.

80's Ford escort + 2.0L non-turbo diesel=

I'd sooner buy a Caddie 5.7L diesel or a Pontiac with the 4.3L V6 diesel.

Mazda 626 diesel? That'd be cool, except for the nightmare of finding parts. I've always had a thing for the early/mid eighties Mazdas.

Yes, I'ts too bad. I had a friend with a little Ranger pickup with that engine. He was getting about 50mpg! Unfortunately, at that time diesels were new to the general U.S. public, along with GM's notoriety, and people steered wide of them. I would think that most general use items such as glow plugs, filters & possibly injectors would still be readily available. Those are about the only components most of us ever have to change on the engine. Actually, I have often wondered if the U.S. manufacturers would be producing more diesels today if they had followed up more on customer service (training) for those engines.

It was a fine machine

I actually ordered a tempo diesel back in 84. It was never a speed demon, however was a very solid performer. Until the head gasket let go @ 100k, it performed perfect. Waited 3 weeks for parts from the dealer in '91, and the gasket only lasted another 6k (dealer install).
Over the 106k I had the car, only changed oil and got a overall milage total of 41mpg.
Would have purchased another one, but they were long out of production.

My buddie runs one of those rangers. He doesnt get 50 mpg's, though more like 22. he pulls a little 4x61/2' trailer around the country in it, powered by grease. he traded a gasser MB for it. He will be selling it soon, as he scored a real diesel-MB. that will be when he gets home to Maine, in a few weeks.

He recently(2yrs ago) had the IP and injectors rebuilt In LaCrosse, WI, by diesel service. the starter is a hard one to find, as was the ring gear for it.

there are quite a few up north, though,eh.

I do know of a escort diesel, sitting in another buddies j/yard. it runs, I guess.
