87 300TD rear wiper and washer pump problems
I just picked up a 1987 300TD and the rear window wiper and washer pump are not working. The fuse appears to be fine. Is there a problem that would relate to both of these functions (i.e., if the wiper doesn't work will it keep the washer pump from engaging?)? Certainly the wiper motor and washer pump could both be bad. Assuming the fuse is not the problem where would be the next place to look?
Thanks for your help. |

On my '85, the motor for the rear wiper had been removed, the wires cut and dangling back there. The washer reservoir is there and the pump is present and wires are in tact, but it won't squirt. I figured the squirter power must have gone through the wiper motor (maybe so the wiper swipes a few times when you squirt?). But haven't looked much further into it. Sorry if I'm not much help.

I suppose the switches could both be bad. Do you have the Shop Manual?

It's pretty common for the wiring harness to the tailgate to fail from repeated flexing as the tailgate is opened and closed.
You can use your Service CD to learn how to lower the headliner a bit, and at the left rear you'll find a nice terminal block where the harness connects. You can then test integrity of wires by their color. New harness is ~$110 IIRC and pretty easy to install. This will cover the wiper. The pump IIRC is on the reservoir in the right-side stowage compartment.
