I would rule out the battery before suspecting the starter. Sounds like your battery is dead. The fact that it wouldn't start in the cold also makes me suspect the glow plugs. Having the wrong viscosity of oil will also make it harder to start, as will fouled fuel injectors.
From what I've read on this forum, 5w-40 diesel rated oil is a good oil for winter. Put a trickle charger on your battery overnight and see if it will take a charge. Or if you don't have one, take the battery to autozone or a NTB and get it tested/charged. I'm not sure how to test glow plugs, but if you do a search on this forum, I'm sure you will find the answer. If it normally runs rough, even when warm, you may want to clean your injectors with Molylube Diesel Purge, or some similar product. Good luck!

Clicking noises are usually associated with battery issues. If you can get it started, a trip to an auto parts store is in order. Consumer Reports rate Pep Boys as tops. To test GP's a multimeter is neccessary. Underhood drivers side inner fender near front, small black box with wire. Open cover, unplug, check with OHM meter. Low numbers are good.

once running, you dont need a battery, or even an alternator. just get it started, and leave her run the rest of the winter
