1994 300e 2.5?

This car is for sale, but my impression is that there was no 1994 300d 2.5. And it seems the headlights are a little different. Could it be a Euro? Or is the year wrong? 1995 had the 6 cylinder non-turbo, I think. This says turbo and the guy seems to know. Any ideas?

90-93.

A Euro would be badged 250D.

I would assume it's a 93.

Probably built in late 93 so he assumes its a 94 model year.

Also, wasn't 1994 when they switched over their model designation to E300? If it were a 94, and they made a 124 diesel in 94, it would be the updated 124 with the E300D badge. I believe the 94 gasser 124 was the first year of the E320.

Looks like a 300D 2.5T/250DT to me.

Well, I looked at it. It's pretty nice. 256k. It's at a shop that does a lot of Mercedes stuff and they have rebuilt the engine - has 100 miles on it. The trans is from another car and has 103k.

It's a 93.

It seemed a bit under powered to me. The same or not quite as good as my 84 300D. But it drives very nicely.

AndI can get it for alot less than $5000.

He said a head gasket was replaced at one point and done poorly. He had the head machined and says everything is ok.

Seems like a stand up guy. Been in business for 21 years. Lots of MB's around.

I've driven a couple of 2.5s. Both had more go off the line than any 617 I've driven, from a perception standpoint anyway. Very linear power delivery. You can't tell when the turbo kicks in. Both seemed to run out of breath sooner than a 603 would but nothing I'd call underpowered.

So, do you take his word on the condition or do you upset him by taking it to another indy for a PPI?

If it is slower than your 84, something's not right. Should do a 0-60 in at most 12 sec. If for some reason you're not getting boost, you'll get about a 18 second 0-60. Check and make sure the ALDA is getting air. IIRC this one does not have a switchover valve, so it should be a straight shot to the ALDA from the manifold. If that's OK, you'll have to dig into checking codes in the EDS.

My 2.5 is slow until about 2000 rpm. After that, it flies. I might try to shim up the ALDA to bring up the power in the lower RPM ranges.

Well, we made a deal on it and maybe this weekend it will be mine. He's going to pressurize the ac and check for leaks, fix the cruise, install a new ac fan (noisy one now), a couple of new tires and warranty the engine. And MD inspect it (a royal pain in the butt).

So, if all goes well, it'll be my new ride. Strider will run backup and my wife's SD will go up for sale.

I'm excited. It's the first time I've been in a 124 and I'm quite impressed with its manners.

One thing I'm not sure of - does this car have a cat or is there something I need dto pay attention to that I'm not used to on my 84?

Ok, it took some time, but I am now the proud owner of my first 124. A white 93 300d 2.5.

Amazing car. Light years ahead of Strider. I bought it from an indy who is warrantying it. It's in the shop now for some things and I hope to get it Monday. If this indy is really doing what he says, I'll report back. It would be amazing if he really is doing all this work on a used car sale.

One car had to go, so the 82 white 300SD has a new home now. Back to only two MB's.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions about this car in the future and I don't think I would have bougt it if not for this forum.

Congratulations. I also just (two months ago) got a 1993 300D 2.5. I'll say that so far I don't regret it (those electronics make me nervous, but apparently they are pretty primitive still). And the car is simply amazing. I love my 123's, but there is no comparison to how it handles, tightness, especially the suspension and steering is so nice. And the power! It's the best car I've ever driven. Now we'll have to see about durability....

The "computer" (if you can even call it one) will drive you nuts if it thinks it finds something wrong. You'll get no boost until you rectify the problem. Pretty much any fault it finds, it will cut the boost, and you'll get 18 second 0-60 times. I was battling with computer/vacuum wastegate problems for a while until I narrowed down the failure to a bad transducer. Do yourself a favor and build yourself one of these code reader/clearers (go to the bottom of the page). If you ever have a problem with the computer, it will save you the trip to the indy/stealership.

But again, when they're running well, they really go.
