82 300dt horrible re-occuring crank balancer issues
First, what are the two pieces of the balancer called? The large disk and the part that slips over the crank with the pins? I need the part that slips over the crank so I want to be asking for the right thing.
Here's the story: I have had a reoccuring problem the entire time I have owned this car. The crank pulley wobbles, which has sheared off the PS pump bolts on one road trip, alternator bolts on another, after that I tried a new pulley, worked for a while. Then the crank sheared off the pins for the balancer. Got new pins, but I must have not put the balancer on straight, so it hit the oil pan and instead of shearing the pins, they rolled and carved out the balancer, so now the balancer is stuck on good. If/when I get it off i will run it to make sure the crank is not bent, then I will try a new balancer and see how long that lasts.

There have been NUMEROUS posts regarding this subject. Even just the ones that I've responded to will empty your printer of paper.
Search Harmonic Balancer on the Diesel Discussion Forum and you will have VOLUMES of information on this subject and get some insight as to what has caused this problem. Unfortunately, the only fix is most likely replacing the crankshaft and the balancer. Good luck,

Either one thoes parts can be reinstalled 180 degrees out, which will lead to all sorts of problems, as you're finding out. Needs to be marked before removal. How to properly install a new one, is best left to a certified mechanic. I understand you need to use a puller to remove balancer.

i agree totally with larry.
the probable result at this point is a new crank. your keyways are probably ruined. unfortunately it is very easy to do for a person that does not know exactly what they are doing. tom w
