Starter woes
Bummer, I am pretty sure that I have to pull the starter on my 83 300D. The last time it started, it almost seemed to have a dead battery. It almost didn’t turn over, then I retried it and it seemed to turn a little slowish but started. I drove to town, switched it off and restarted, no problem. Next day, tried to start it and no go. It acts just like an almost dead battery, but I recharged the battery, still no go. Turn the headlights on and try the key, and the headlights are bright, don’t dim or anything. Cleaned battery terminals and the main ground between body and engine. Still no go.
Any suggestions other than have fun? Seems that I read on someone’s post that he cut an allen wrench socket down short enough to fit between the bolt and the firewall. Anyone know if this will work. My car is sitting on the grass and there is no easy way to get it onto cement to lower the transmission and driveshaft. Thanks, Wayne

No need to lower trans and driveshaft. You just need about 36" of extensions to access the starter bolts from alongside and behind the transmission. Also a long breaker bar, they are usually tight.

I just pulled my starter the other day. I didn't need to lower ther transmission or anything else. I was able to get to the lower bolt in the starter without to much problem. The top one was a little harder. I ended up using this setup, and put the pieces together as I slid it in between the transmission and the tunnel.
10mm hex bit socket--U-Joint--2' extension--6' extension--ratchet. I didn't need a breaker bar, but it was on fairly tight. I'd suggest a few good squirts of some penetrating oil a day or two before you pull the starter.
