Starting car from under the hood

I work on the car so much that I get tired of getting into the driver's seat to start the car. And I don't like getting grease on the interior.

Is there a way to start the car from under the hood?

You need to buy a remote starter lead from your friendly local NAPA. Connect one end to your + battery terminal and the other to your crank lead at the starter.

That will only turn the starter, it won't turn on the fuel or the glow plugs. Do you want to start the engine, or just turn it over?

I have a remote start alarm installed in my car, but if you don't want to go theough all that, disconnecting the vacuum line to the fuel shutoff and turning the starter should work, although you should only do it to a hot engine since glowplugs won't work..

I don't know about MB wiring but I start and run other makes and models of diesels with a dummy keyswitch wired from the battery through a 25 amp fuse to the dummy keyswitch "B", from the dummy keyswitch "Ign" to the keyed "On" hotside of any 15 amp or higher fuse in the fusebox and the dummy keyswitch "St" to the crank lead on the starter. I have 3 of these in looms with alligator clips to connect to the various circuits.

passenger side wheel well inside the engine bay with the hood up. 3 wires comming to a small plastic box with three philips screws. Touch the 2 front (I think if I remember correct) and whalla. Only works if really warm or car has been run as it does not turn on the gps. Just goes straight to the starter. Had to do it a couple of times in the past when a problem with my park sensor on the tranny.

if you know where the IP is, the large plastic barrel at the end, has a brown plastic line in it. that's it, just pull it out.
you could run a jumper to the GP's I suppose, but it would not be easy. possibly a set of wires on the gp relay? shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

ohh yea in order to cycle the gps the relay (plug) is on the drivers side behind the headlight on the front side of the fender. That way you can just leave the key on and disconnect that and plug it in when you are ready to crank then tough your pliers to the screws on the otherside and you are golden.

I'd never considered jumping via pliers I was actually holding...

Hell I've used my keys one time when I left the pliers at home and was in a pinch. Didn't feel a thing

12 volts really isn't enough to do anything to you, the body is an insulator at those voltages. I've had 240 through the fingers a few times, now that HURTS! Shocks usually can't kill you unless their either powerful enough to cook you, or travel through the heart.

Talked my parents into not hiring an electrician and letting me wire up a 240 outlet for the dryer (house originally built for a gas dryer, only had a 120 outlet). I didn't feel like shutting down power to the whole house, so I did it hot.. Little slip of the finger while twisting 2 hot wires together.. Its ok to touch hot wires, as long as your not grounded.. and guess what i touched.. (worse than ground, you'll know if you know how the 2-phase ac in a house works..) More than worth it tho, no damage, just a little pain for the 5 seconds i was a wire.. Made $100
