What worked for me was drilling out at least most of the aluminum spacer and then doing a reverse installation. That is getting the lip of the bushing pretty well squeezed in a vice and the rotating the arm while lifting. I did the same to the other bushing on the other side. It worked and was pretty quick and easy.

Yes, that looks like the correct tool. Assuming you have a press.
How much?

Have done this job last summer. Posted pics in BW on my 84SD 177k

Great work body art! I am pretty sure the special BJ PRESS tool will work on 140s also. Idid this all with new HD springs/bilsteins.

Nothing like digging up a decade old post. Sorry bout that.

I can't find the JTC tool for sale any longer. And as luck would have it, I have a machine shop in my garage! I would love to replicate this tool, but can't find anyone in possession of the thing.

Any of you lucky souls OWN this tool? I sure could use a couple of measurements.

Thank you!
Jason

As I recall, at least one reader rigged their own tool to press in the lower ball joint. They cut an opening in a steel tube for the spindle arm to pass thru.

I used the Harbor Freight C-clamp Balljoint tool on their loaner program. It was very hard to press in, partly because the new balljoint measured slightly larger OD, perhaps purposeful to assure it will be tight. I could see the C-clamp bending under load, so was afraid I would crack it and Autozone make me buy it. But, didn't end up looking bent. Later, HF had a sale so I bought their similar C-clamp tool, but haven't used on my M-B, though a few jobs on other vehicles (not ball joints). If I ever repeat, I'll use Rollguy's hint of tightening, then whacking the end of the loading bolt with a big hammer and repeat. That makes it a bit more of a "beat it in tool", which is how I removed it.

Re the JTC-1849 tool, Amazon Canada lists but "not in stock, may never return", so also doesn't show price. Tokopedia shows 2 available in Jakarta, Indonesia. I will be there in Dec, and have bought from Toko (like Amazon or Temu), but price of $236 is nada for me. I wouldn't risk buying it to flip to a U.S. owner, even if a reader claimed foolish enough to pay that much. Appears it could buckle under load since not a complete tube. I'll trust my C-clamp press.

Ya, there is a guy over on benzworld trying to make one. I told him about the slot in the side and later he asked me what the dimensions were. I had to tell him I never owned one of the tools and the pics I posted were from the internet.

I guess people can still take it to a shop and pay to have the new ball joints pressed in.
