Thumbs up Which chassis/engine fam does my 240D belong to?

I'm trying to gather up more parts, and the '79 is a split year for the motor and the chassis it appears. My VIN is as follows:

1231231013325

Thanks

It is a 123 chassis, with the early 616 engine of the ones used in the 123 family. As far as I've seen the 80 model year was split with some early cars having the earlier engine and the late 80 cars having the later engine. The early engine had about 3 less HP.

Your car also probably has a brass radiator, loop type glow plugs (which are commonly converted to pin type,) the Chrysler climate control unless you are lucky and have manual a/c controls, cast door straps instead of the later flimsy stamped sheet metal ones, a two cylinder York type compressor mounted on the passenger side upper, and probably an 85 MPH speedometer.

There are numerous other detail differences between the early 123's and the later ones, but one is as good as the other IMHO. There are advantages both ways. I drove my 77 only 286,000 miles. By that time I figured out just how long lived they could be so when I got my 84 Euro 240D I took MUCH better care of it and it topped a half million.

Enjoy,

Yes on the loop plugs, I ordered a pencil fast glow kit.

Yes on the Manual Climate

Has the R4 compressor

100mph speedo with SAE readings for the oil and temp gauges

I think the VIN was incorrect

12312310133325 is what it appears to be, seemed to me missing a three if that matters, which... it probably does.

the chassis number doesnt maker sense to me. Your vin is missing the 3 letters because its a euro (and because its pre 81).

I didnt realize thats what you were asking earlier, you just wanted an engine and chassis number?

My late '79 (now sold) had the newer engine while my early '79 (now no longer with a 616) had the early type of engine.

'79 was the transition year.

I stand corrected then. I thought that 80 was the transition year. My wife had a stick shift 240D for awhile a long time ago and I thought it was an 80, but maybe it was a 79.

Your chassis is 123123. then the 10 denotes car built in Germany & manual tranny I believe. The the 133325 is your specific serial #, which is the one often used when there is a split in parts.
All models and many different years have different choices based on the specific part.
