Sheared crank pulley bolts? 240D

Anyone care to guess what might cause this? There is a 240D for sale in my region that has sheared all 6 (!) bolts on the crank pulley. The seller claims he has no idea why they sheared, just that a shop told him that's what happened. Seized water pump? I wonder what else might be damaged?

Thanks in advance!

I would think a few of them simply got a bit loose. A seized water pump will only cause the belt to slip and burn up.

Thanks, Matt. Just found this thread, too:

Not a totally untypical problem. If you're interested, make sure the end of the crankshaft and the keyway are not buggered.

And use minimum grade 8 hex head fasteners when you re-assemble.
I have made it a habit to replace these fasteners every time I have one off.

Depends on how long the engine ran after the pulley bolts failed. Siezed or not, the water pump quit pumping at the time of the failure.

Good luck getting the stubs out. 2 of mine were basically for all purposes welded in place.

Oooooh... what did you winf up doing? Just lots of elbow grease and finesse?

Thanks for the tips, BTW, everyone.

The car supposedly has minimal rust (I'll be the judge of that after I see more pics) and a virgin, UN-CRACKED dash in a very nice interior. So the seller says... we'll see!
