W124 Question

Why does the W124 have a huge fuel tank flap, and what looks like a cutout for a second filler pipe? Was there a dual-tank option or something?

The fuel filler flap and recess are designed to allow installation of an alternative fuel tank (e.g. LP gas) worldwide.

The diesel could run on LP???

Maybe they made the door big for the E models, not the D. I mean, could a diesel run on LP?
