Valve adjustment and economy

I've owned my car for ten months. I did my first ever valve adjustment in mind November and have noticed a definite increase in fuel consumption since then. I was consistently getting about 31,5 mpg before that and since then it's been just over 29mpg.

All the valves were tight as possible when I did them but it's quite possible I might have done a less than perfect job of adjustment. My question is could that account for the increase in fuel consumption? My driving routine and filling stations have not changed at all during this time.

- Peter.

What is winterized diesel? Would that exist in Phoenix?

They cut it with anti-gell agents and boost the cetane level. At Lebanon Junction here in KY the best diesel station cuts it w/kerosene to make their own custom wintertime blend. Meanwhile outdoor temp drop between now and Nov. itself would be contributing factor. And at 380k miles another item might be Injector Pump Timing, especially if it haint been done in over 120k miles or so. IP timing added tremendous boost in fuel mileage for mine at about 150k on the original chain.

Did you notice an increase in acceleration after the valve adjustment? If so you may be taking off quicker which will lower your mpg.

The motor was rebuilt 200000 miles ago but I guess IP timing could still be a factor. I have not noticed any difference in performance at all.

Not really. My MPG has not changed more than 1mpg average from 2005-2007.
