Amg 300sd
Look at this 125HP monster of a diesel!
The off center star on the grill and missing lug nut scares me. The Erbauni kit looks nice but ive heard that they crack easily and this is proof. Remove the rear wing and grill, and ill like it. Your opinions? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-300SD-AMG-1983-MERCEDES-BENZ-300SD-AMG-TURBO-DIESEL-CALIFORNIA_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6330QQihZ018QQitemZ280081068422QQrdZ1 |
I do like the steering wheel and speakers in the 4 doors.
I don't like the body kit, cheap air horns (1 is missing), wrong battery, and that it's all-show-no-go. |
Classic case where modifications diminish value of the car
When AMG was modifying cars back in the 1980's, the rule was that to qualify for purchasing an AMG trunk script, the car had to have at least three AMG modifications. And that DIDN'T mean 4 AMG wheels either.
This unit has NO, repeat, NO, AMG pieces on it. Only 4 AMG aftermarket monoblocks, period incorrect, with a missing lug nuts. AN aftermarket grille with a cockeyed MB star on it, spoiler and ground effects from an unknown source, and likewise an aftermarket non AMG steering wheel, and VERY dark window tint with body color door handles but not mirror backs. Basically, a lame customization. Another abuse of the "AMG" name to sell what MIGHT be a a decent running W126 diesel. Nothing more than that. This car is probably WORTH LESS after the fake AMG modifications than before. At least he didn't try to boost its value by using the "BIODIESEL" hype so commonly used to try and sell cars. Cars with amateur modifications demand sharp scrutiny for mechanical faults in my opinion. I don't like this anything about this car. A good stock unmolested one would be better. |
Why Would Someone Do That To A Car !!!!!what A Shame !
|
I agree with Jim 100%; the owner should have just left it alone.
|
Not a bad looking car but needs some serious TLC. It is funny how any MB with any kind of body mod gets called an AMG.
|
beat.. but what were the diesel amg mods during the time period?
|
Its pretty lame, the grill is awful. That body kit on a 500SE, with some proper wheels and without the wing would look sweet.

I think the steering wheel is ok, not sure on the rest of it....the grille is ultra ugly. Wheels....ehhh...a little too "bling". Looks like a nicely maintained car appearance-wise....missing lug though..

As far as I know, MB never had AMG diesels. Read Frank Barret's book. AMG were mods done to cars to boost their performance - not just change their appearance. Mods done on engine to boost hp, suspension and other parts to help with performance.

AMG was not part of MB back in the 80's, they were an aftermarket tuner. Like Renntech, Brabus, and Kleeman are today. AMG would do whatever the customer wanted to whatever car they brought to them. At a very steep price of course, $$$$$$$.:D I would not be surprised if a 300SD was done up by AMG at some point, but I am sure it was not common. Fuel was cheap and people wanting performance, or a fast looking car at least were not buying SD's. They were buying 300 hp 500SEL's and having AMG drop in quad cam 6L V8's.:D  Note most really nice AMG'd W126's seem to be coming out of Japan. A lot of these cars cost almost $200K, 1980's dollars and as a result comand steep premiums today. But if you like the W126 an AMG'd version is just about the ultimate expression of this vehical, super fast, extremly exclusive, with stunning looks. http://www.500sec.com/images/amg/ima..._small_sec.jpg |

That's the first 126 kit I've seen that keeps DOT bumper profile. That might be why the kit doesn't look right. All the other kits I've seen have Euro bumper profile.
I looked as closely as I could and it looks like the front bumper is one piece, not an air dam grafted onto the original bumper. I could be wrong. IIRC the first offical AMG Diesel is the W202 C30 from a few years ago. Obviously body and suspension bits fit any car but the C30 is the first I've read about AMG touching a Diesel engine.
