Oil Cooler Question

To preface...I'm a learning owner...and not very mechanically knowledgeable. So, in the pic you can see crimped line on my Oil Filter housing. Does this mean my oil cooler has been eliminated? And why would the PO do this? I've read here that the lines are a pain to change...is this going to cause any trouble?

You can also see the upgraded glowplugs...which have made a HUGE difference!

Yep, It sure looks like it to me? Do you have an oil cooler next to the radiator? I have no clue as to why your PO did that!

Post that picture over on the other 'Is the oil cooler necessary ' thread. It should stir a lot of controversy.

I don't have one next to the radiator. should I replace it, or just keep it like it is? It's been to my mechanic around 4 times and he has never said anything about it, so I just thought I'd ask here.

I missed this thread in my search. I'm going to look over there and maybe it'll answer my question. Sorry for the redundant post.

Found my answers here:

Ah, Thanks for the link...looks like I found lots of answers. I'll keep it as-is for now and if I find a good parts car maybe I'll add it back.

Thanks!

You need to fix it. IF your oil gets hot, the engine will try to send oil to the cooler (Which the lines are blocked off) and starve the engine of oil.

I thought there was a permanent bypass possibility in the system to avoid such a problem. Don't the non-oil cooler models just have plugs where the hoses would be? I seem to recall that my 307d without an oil cooler simply had plugs.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it might be looped.

There is a bypass, but the bypass flow is reduced as the thermostat opens. Your 307 probably did not have a thermostat.

It looks like the end is just crushed flat.

May not be one in this either.

Just posted this on the other oil cooler thread.

Just looked up the topic in my shop manual. 615 engines only had oil coolers if it had AC. 616 had oil coolers standard until 1978. After 1978 oil coolers only installed on 616 if they had AC. 617's always had oil coolers.

In looking at the diagram in the shop manual, it looks to me as though once the thermostat opens, it permits oil to flow both up into the filter and out to the cooler. It states "In the end position (with the thermostat open) the direct flow th comination fileter elemens is closed escept for a given quantity of oil. this oil quantity is enough to guaranett lubrication of engine at low outside temperatures, when the through-flow in oil cooler is considerable detained by the now viscous oil. The major oil quantity arrives at air oil cooler where it is cooled and then flows back to oil filter housing the through oilter filter housing from outside in"

You've got AC so it looks like MB thinks you need the oil cooler.
