Replacing a head gasket on 190D?

I am looking at a 1987 190D that has an oil leak at the head gasket. Currant owner has a quote from his Mercedes mechanic of $750 labor to replace the gasket, plus the part. I am a farmer/rancher by trade, and have worked on tractor/truck motors before, and have a pretty well equipped shop on the farm. Could I be able to replace the head gasket myself, and save the Mercedes mechanics $750? Also, are the 1987 heads made out of aluminum, and are prone to cracking?
thanks,
coadman
